It might be nice to have a 50 year old watch. I could see that. Change
is fun too. Got to be flexible, enjoy it and go with the flow. Otherwise
your feet get all stuck in the mud. No one likes that. Well, almost no
one anyway.

I just want to know what time it is.

As it happens, I have 2 Rolexes. One is 60 years old and the other is 70
years old. They're essentially worthless, because there once were
Rolexes that weren't jewellery. They belonged to my father. He bought
one in 1944 and his 2nd wife gave him the other in 1955. They both work,
but are in desperate need of overhaul. The "newer" is an Oyster, but you
can bet that it ain't waterproof no more; the older one you have to wind
by hand. Time marches on.

Then the Watch isn't for you. What others want out of it is much more
that the time of one half or the other half of the day.

They are definitely not worthless.

Well, "worthless" is overdoing it I guess. I could probably sell them
for a couple-three hundred dollars each. I'm still planning on getting
the Oyster brought back to life.

They are worth more than that, if you are being offered $200-$300 they
are trying to rob you.

I haven't actually tried to sell them, but a few years ago I posted
pictures of them on a (good) Rolex collector's website, and that was
pretty much what I was told.

They were low-balling you. They are collecting those Rolexes at the
lowest, if not opportunistcally low prices. If you don't know what they
are worth why let a potential buyer set the price?

My dad gave me a Swiss watch when I was nine years old. Wore it for a
few hundred years and gave up when mobile phones became a popular
accessory. It was faithfully serviced for all that time, it eventually
had to have new hands, a new winder, and god knows what else inside
over the years, a wonder it was the "same" watch. Still have it in a
box somewhere.

When it came it had luminous dots and numbers, some of those alpha,
beta and gamma rays presumably went into me (as did some from shoe
shops when they x-rayed your feet inside shoes to see how they fit!).

Old joke about the guy who had a knife once owned by Jim Bowie. He later
explained that the hilt had been replaced twice and the knife once, but
it still occupied the same space in time...

Or, in my case, to keep one busy looking at his young feet instead of
whining about how bored they were whilst the younger sister was picking
out shoes. (grin)

If that's what you would like to sell them for, you're on. Let me know
and I'll send you my contact info.

Why is everyone on to Oatsie about selling, he never gave the
impression of wanting to sell and I doubt if he would. Please, you

Aw, thanks. Of course I'm not going to sell them. I'm also keeping the
Leica M3 my father bought in 1955, with all sorts of neat kit (telephoto
lens, light meter, etc). The day he bought a digital camera, he stopped
using the Leica, though - still had a roll of film sitting in it when he
died. Gawd, he took terrible pictures. But he had some neat stuff. He
built an enlarger after WW2 using a lens that he stole from a captured
Japanese submarine. I used it a few times; it wasn't great, but it
worked.

Another thing he brought back form Japan was a ceramic jar with a glass
lid, but the glass lid's all melted down into the jar from the heat of
the Nagasaki bomb. It's probably spewing radiation as I write this.

There's an easy way to find out. Use some of Dad's unexposed film.
Put a frame on top of the dish, leave for 30 seconds. Repeat with a
frame but leave for 60s. Repeat for arbitrary intervals until you
either decide its enough or get bored.
 Print the images, if any.
The clearer the image is in a shorter time the more radioactive the
bugger was.
Big Red Safety Hint: If the frame you just wave over the dish at a
distance of 30 centimetres goes totally dark you may wish to sequester
it in a deep, dark, lead-lined vault.

Mr. Oates is more than capable of punching the sharks on the snout himself.

Nice of you to protect him, though.

You don't know the half of it. He might seem to have all under
control, but it is all bravado and chutzpa, he is a mighty volcano
with swirling torments of unresolved anxieties. It is in everyone's
interest, not just his, to keep him in check by showing every possible
understanding of the sheer humanity that lies at the heart of him.

Those are kind thoughts. When are you visiting North America?

Late May. I will try to get time off from my much better half to hire
a horse and hit the trail and round up a posse to hunt down the
remnants of The Balderstone Gang. In case Pirate Jolly thinks he can
escape, I will be hiring fast cutters to scour the seas too. <g>

Saw a program last night on a section of the mountains of Nevada where
that Steve Fossey went down, apparently a very dangerous area for
planes (because of fairly severe and unpredictable weather events).
Will be driving through the general area hopefully, Death Valley, I
can't wait! Always wanted to set foot on American Soil and see where
all the things I have seen here happened.

For example, Black Rock where Spencer Tracy surprised everyone by
stepping from a rarely stopped train there, later using his only arm
to karate chop Robert Ryan's henchman Ernest Borgine.

That is in the Eastern Sierras, West of Hwy 395 in the Mammoth Lakes region.

> Will be driving through the general area hopefully, Death Valley, I

Depending on how you approach Death Valley you might be in the general
area. If you get up to Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills you will be in
country where many Westerns were made. Just South to Lone Pine Hwy 136
heads East to Death Valley NP. Head a little further North to Mono Lake
and you will be where Clint Eastwood filmed "High Plains Drifter". Some
scenes in other Eastwood movies were done West of Lone Pine.

Black Rock does not exist, it is pure motion picture fabrication. That
said, it was filmed just out side of Lone Pine, with the various jeep
and other vehicle chases taking place in the Alabama Hills West of Lone
Pine. If you want to locate the site go to Google Earth, find Lone
Pine, California and search along the old railroad tracks. The Southern
Pacific train which featured in "Black Rock" no longer runs.

OK, thanks for the info. There is a Blackrock in California, I think
it is a bit south of Lone Pine, but maybe not the one where Tracy
calmly outfoxed the townsfolk.

Yes, about Cowboy ghosts, I will look for a town painted red, North to
Mono Lake.

By God, I am going to be busy. Have to congratulate U.S. Marshal
Raylan Givens on some of his draws when I get to Harlan County.

So much to do, so little time!
