#20834 — Converting video from wmv to mp4

FromW^3 <82ndAve@comcast.net>

SubjectConverting video from wmv to mp4
Message-ID<82ndAve-472442.23070530012014@News.Individual.NET>
I have been using MPEG Streamclip (MS) to convert wmv files to mp4's.
I drag the wmv file into the MS window, then select "Export to
MPEG-4". I then see another window, in addition to the main video
window, where I can choose various options:

Compression: I leave this set at H.264.

Quality: Well, I set it at 100%. Why not? More quality is better isn't
it? (Frankly I'm not sure what this one is all about.)

Limit Data Rate: I usually try to match the Mbps rate of the original
wmv file.

I leave the other settings alone.

The mp4's I get out of this are not too bad, but they're definitely
inferior to the original. The color is a bit bleached and some detail
and depth is lost. Again, not a dramatically worse version of the
original, but noticeable.

Is this just the nature of the beast, or am I doing something wrong?
I've done some research on this on the web, where MS is often referred
to as a high-quality video converter, but I haven't found an answer to
my question.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just a note on this, I tried Handbrake to convert an MP4 today and it
just would *not* recognise it. Streamclip ate it like a nice Satay
entree we have at my local Thai. And converted it to MP3 in very
pleasing quick time. And I am a fan of Handbrake!

( a bit old, and VLC can be a bitch to work with this way )

Or do it from the command-line with ffmpeg.

I have not used Handbrake, so I can not say more about it.
AppGeeker video converter may be worth a try, It is what I always use when need converting videos.
http://www.appgeeker.com/how-to/convert-wmv-to-mp4-mac.html
There are 3 options available for quality of output file: High Quality, Standard, and Small Size.
If you using "High Quality" option, the videos were all pretty close to the same high quality they were before.

I found out another way to easily convert WMV to MP4 on Mac and Windows at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/wmv-to-mp4-mac-and-windows.html

It also allows to convert WMV to MOV, FLV, AVI, SWF, MKV, OGV, WebM, ASF, MPG, etc.

Hope it will help you more or less.

It's been several years since I've even seen a WMV file, spammer scum.
