#20307 — Spelling Checker in Mail.app

FromMatthew Lybanon <lybanon@earthlink.net>

SubjectSpelling Checker in Mail.app

The spelling checker can be useful in correcting typos (I have it check
when I press Send; it's too annoying to have it correct as I type). But
it is not very intelligent. If I reply to a message and quote the
original message, the spelling checker checks that as well‹not only the
original message's text but its address list as well.

I understand that it probably just looks like one continuous block of
text to the spelling checker. But does anybody know of some secret
flag, or something, that can tell the spelling checker to restrict its
search to only the text that I type?

What is the problem with it checking quoted text? Does it slow down
the spellchecking? Do the underlined words annoy you? Something else?

If you're not going to correct the errors (would you?), what's the point
of marking them?

I don't see the problem. Are you unable to ignore them?

I almost never use spell checkers. One of the reasons is that I find
those red squigglies really annoying. My communication is full of lots
of abbreviations and technical jargon that isn't in the dictionaries.
Yes, I know you can update them, but it's a PITA.

I do.

Although sometimes it seems to turn itself back on. I had this problem
with Chrome, I would turn it off and a few days later it would be back
on again. I haven't noticed it in a while, so maybe they've fixed the
bug.

Each time the spelling checker finds something it thinks is wrong, it
stops until I do something. Not only do I not want to correct things in
quoted text, but I also pointed out another problem: It checks the
email address list in the quoted message. OF COURSE it finds thing that
it doesn't recognize as words.

FOLLOWUP TO MY FOLLOWUP: Mail.app's spelling checker is useful when it
checks my text, but useless when it checks quoted text. If I just have
to live with that situation, so be it. It isn't the end of the world.
I was just hoping someone knew of a clever trick to improve this
situation.

1 Turn on "Check Spelling while typing"
2 Look for any squiggly lines in the text you type
3 For each squiggly, decide if you want to correct that word

Then change your preferences so it doesn't do that. Have it check
as you type instead of when you send the message.

I was wondering the same. If the spellchecker on the iPad just underlined
words, I could use it to catch typos, but it kept inserting out and out
mistakes instead of just underlining beyond its limited vocabulary. I had
to turn it off. The underlining on my laptop doesn't bother me. Of course,
it gets carried away when I type something in another language 8-)

You're talking about a spelling *corrector*, not a spell *checker*. I
think the former is common on mobile devices to deal with the more
common typos.

The thing wasn't dealing with typos ; it was inserting flat-out errors in
unfinished words.

Isn't that what it's supposed to do? To get good speed when texting,
it's supposed to predict what you're typing from the unfinished word.

This is mostly a remnant of flip-phones, where you have to type
everything with the numeric keypad. I'm surprised iOS devices do it when
they have a full QWERTY keyboard.

It's one of those quirks of iOS you have to accustom yourself to: when
an invalid suggested spelling appears, there is an "x" on the right side
of its window. Touch the "x" and the invalid suggestion goes away. If
you leave it untouched, the suggestion is installed over the text you
have typed.

It's a question of turning off spelling correction entirely or
accustoming yourself to using touch to take control of it. I found it
inconvenient at first, but I am getting used to it. I find a good per
cent of the suggestions are valid and ease my typing task, but certainly
not all of them.

Only if you see the error right away. I can't touch type on the iPad's
keyboard, so the misspellings slip in. I had to turn it off. Underlining,
on the other hand, would have been useful for typo-spotting.

Quite so. You understood my point and made your choice to turn it off. I
only add that learning to touch type on an iPad and anticipating
unwanted corrections is a somewhat useful exercise and not a complete
waste of time.

Actually, I instinctively one-finger type on my iPad but my old
touch-typing habit keeps me aware of where the keys are. I don't do
documents on the iPad, just one-paragraph texts at most. I am
touch-typing this Usenet message on my laptop, as usual.

I'm usually sitting in a position where I need a hand to hold the iPad with
one hand. If I'm away from home and want to type longer texts, the
external keyboard/case is right there and I use that. I don't keep it next
to my recliner at home8-)

Talking of which, I have always admired the way Google can come up
with the word you want from the abortion you type, a task the limited
formal dictionary-governed spell-checkers of so many apps.
