Will you STOP this stupid quoting.

It's a complete fucking pain in the arse having to go back to what
you quoted from so I can see what that comment was about.

Here is what you should have included in the quoting

It doesn't have to be in your home to be completely secure.

And you don't have to own it for it to be completely secure either.

Like hell it does.

>>> which means that they are not private.

>> They are if what they see has been encrypted before they see it.

By encrypting it yourself before you put it in the cloud.

Doesn’t matter if what they see is encrypted before they see it.

you skip the cloud for what you want to keep private.

the problem is that calendars and contacts must go through the cloud.

other stuff can skip the cloud and go over usb.

From what Ive been reading here, the new stuff won't allow any USB sync

What about the (local) WiFi sync that iTunes implemented a few years ago
(if I understood this concept correctly, never used it so far)? If this
still available in Mavericks or did they kill that as well?

That's at least something... :-)

WiFi syncing is still there, but it has the same limitation as USB
syncing: it cannot be used to sync contacts & calendars any more in
Mavericks. Other content (music, podcasts, photos, etc.) still sync fine
via WiFi.

If you want to sync contacts & calendars, you need to use iCloud,
Google, an Exchange server, some other CalDAV/CardDAV service, or roll
your own server.

Thanks for the clarification! :-)

They didn't kill "USB connections". You can still connect your iDevice
and get e.g. photos into iPhoto...

What they killed, is the "local synch framework". Regardless if via USB
or WiFi.

Which is why there are certain things I do not use the internet for. Also
why my dog has a Facebook page and I, at least publicly, do not 8-)

You would have security through obscurity. Gmail, Outlook.com, iCloud,
Facebook, et al, are big, fat targets because of the myriad of data about
millions of individuals they contain.

A CardDAV server hosted at "davoud.com" (or at your IP address itself
with no name server reference) would be so far off the radar, nobody
would be looking for it.

Not true, it is very easy to setup a remote server that is completely
immune to spying. It is hard to do that when the server has to serve
multiple people in multiple locations. But it is possible to be immune
to MITM attacks.

For example, my ssh login to my server across town uses a public/private
key pair. The private key is *only* on my local computers and has never
travelled over the Internet in anyway. Because of that, my ssh
connection to that machine is secure.

This is not a viable solution for most users.

However, there are technologies like PFS that will secure the Internet
against the NSA. The US Government was terrified of the so-called 'dark
net' but they have done more than anyone to ensure it. In a few years
the technology will be in place so that everyone on the Internet is not
only encrypted and secure, but it *cannot* be decrypted by anyone
outside of the specific transaction.

And even if they were, if you put it behind https and did it right, it
would be impervious to eavesdropping without a court order compelling you
to give up your ssl keys.

But in a few years, even that won't work. PFS and deniable encryption
are coming.

Wow! That means no web surfing, no e-mail, no USENET, no Internet full
stop--because it all puts personal stuff on the the remote servers that
we have come to call "the cloud."

Everybody? Really? Europeans are so poor at basic arithmetic that they
think that NSA can spy on /everybody/ ? Or Europeans' egos are so
puffed up that they think (hope?) that they are important enough to
draw the attention of the U.S. Intelligence Community? Wrong again.

You may continue to make fun of this topic - but be aware that one day
you might wake up in a world that you always thought was not possible to
come true.

And believe me, NSA *is* capable (quantitywise) of collecting all the
information they can get their hands on. Regardless of what they might
tell the public... Whether my data (or your data) is part of this
collection is not so much my concern, I'm already concerned more than
enough about it *possibly* being part of it.

But I guess you will not understand these concerns, because you never
read '1984', you never lived in a country that had experienced in its
last 100 years two dictatorships, both making use of very effective
secret services as well against internal 'enemies', ...

But sure, the NSA aims only at terrorists. Ah, could you please remind
me in exactly which terrorist plots the German chancellor, the French
prime minister and ~30 high ranking politicians from around the world
were involved? Momentarily slipped my memory...

So much for 'We're only after the bad guys...' :-(

Best regards, and keep on dreaming,

Michael

No one ever claimed that.

The NSA's mission is to collect signals intelligence from both allies,
enemies, potential enemies, and neutral parties in order to further the
political and military interests of the United States. (Those are my
words, not the official mission statement, but I'm quite accurate in my
assessment.) Knowing what an ally would do in a given situation helps
the US determine what it would do. If we knew, for instance, that
Germany would not back us up if we took a given action might cause us
not to take that action; however, if we knew that Germany would back us
up, it would help decide to take that action.

> So much for 'We're only after the bad guys...' :-(

We never said that.

US officials did. Might not have been in the US media, but it was over
here in Europe, Germany in particular.

US officials did. Might not have been in the US media, but it was over
here in Europe, Germany in particular.

And believe me, I know what the services want to achieve - this is
completely independent from the country they belong to. Nevertheless, it
is a question they should continuously ask themselves whether everything
they can should be done by them. E.g. spying on high(est)-ranking
politicians from close allies. E.g. tapping into the phone calls of
high(est)-ranking politicians from close allies. ...

They should always consider the harm done if this gets public (as it now
has), and the loss in trust the US has to bear by that.

Or, to put it the other way around: What would you say, what would POTUS
say if the German (or French or Spanish or ...) secret service tapped
into his phone calls, noticing who he was talking to, possibly even
listening to every word said? I really wouldn't expect that anybody in
the US would take that lightheartedly... ;-)

No, from my point of view here the US definitively went to far in their
attempt to gather as much information as possible. Sorry, but Keith
Alexander (and many others) seems to have lost track who is friend and
who is foe.

Best regards,

Michael

No, they didn't. Any reports you may have read saying that they did
are distortions at best and fabrications at worst.

Ok, if you feel that the video at
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6Kc5Xvr24Aw> is
a fabrication, be my guest. But I'd say that Keith Alexander is actually
a quite high-ranking US official and that the video looks pretty
original to me.

That Alexander claims to protect at the same time civil rights and
privacy is no more than a claim to me, and not a very likely one seeing
that they routinely violate civil rights and privacy of people known to
have no connection to terrorism whatsoever.

Best regards,

Michael
