I have a spreadsheet in which column A contains dates; the dates are not necessarily consecutive, but they are always in chronological order. I want to be able to summarize totals for each month. I can't figure out how to do this. Is there a solution?

This categorizes the dates by grouping them into months, showing a summary row at the start of each month. Then you can add summary fields in the month summary row for other columns, e.g. to sum, average or count the entries for each month, and the same summary field will be shown for each month. If you mean Numbers 3.x, it appears to have no equivalent feature. Yet another reason to steer clear of it until it catches up some more. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

One workaround that I just now thought of is to have a different sheet for each month, and put the summaries, via a "sum" function on sheet 1. Thanks.

Sure, there are options to do it with structure or calculations, but it isn't as nice as the categorize feature. A brute force method while keeping all the months on a single sheet would be another column which calculated a consistent value for all rows with the same month e.g. for row 2 =DATE(YEAR(A2),MONTH(A2),1) would result in all rows for January 2014 having 2014-01-01 in that column. Another column could then have a formula which conditionally summed adjacent rows by looking for matching dates. You could pull the results out on another sheet. (If you only have one year's data in the spreadsheet, then pulling out the month would be sufficient.) I've tried each update of the latest Numbers and Pages briefly but even with the x.1 updates, they are breaking simple documents I use regularly, so I'm still sticking with the '09 versions. I don't use Keynote as much, or with any complex features, so it is more likely I could move to the new version, except I need to maintain document compatibility with someone else whose Mac can't upgrade to Mavericks, so I'll have to keep using Keynote '09. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I believe that there's an option to save in '09 format; I haven't checked that in Keynote, but it is there in Pages and Numbers.

Yes it's there in Keynote too. -- If you make it well enough, you give it immortality.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Of course. AsI said, it's nice to have but not necessary. The column headings are Date Black Silver Red Gold Platinum. I have a second table that has the same headings plus "total" The first row under the headings contains the sums of each of the corresponding rows in the first table. Total, of course, totals the rest of the row. The second row contains the percentages of the total for each color. And for the heck of it, there's a pie chart showing each of the colors (currently except for platinum because that column is still blank).
