While you are typing, a box appears below the field with matches. Once
you've got "ebay" typed, Safari automatically adds the .com portion for
you in the field, and you see matches including:

1. The top hit (www.ebay.com), which is selected by default
2. Google Search auto-completion matches
3. Matching bookmarks and matches from your browsing history

Here's a screen shot:

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/safari/search_location_bar.png>

If you want to go to the web site, you can just type Enter/Return.

If you want some other match, such as a Google search, you can use the
arrow keys or mouse/trackpad to select it.

This behavior seems perfectly fine to me.

only because it's in your history and it knows about it.

now try it with a site you have never been to. it will not add the www.
and .com. it will do a search, unless you add a .com or /.

Right. So that happens exactly once, and then for ever more after that
it works exactly the way I described. I'm not seeing the problem here.

if you always go to the same sites, then no, it won't be a problem, but
then why bother typing anything? just bookmark them and it's just a
click.

meanwhile, many people go to new sites they haven't been to and will
encounter it.

The majority of people I know visit familiar sites for more often than
they visit strange, new sites.

Meanwhile many, many others will simply type the whole domain name and
live happily ever after.

There's only so many sites you can fit in your bookmarks bar. If you
have lots of sites, you have to start grouping them into menus and
submenus, and then it's more than just one click. If you can get there
by just typing the first few characters and using the autocomplete (if
I've been to Ebay recently, all I have to type is "e" and it's at the
top of the list), that ends up being easier than navigating menus.

On my system (OS 10.8.6, Safari 6.1.1) typing "ebay" and Return gets me
a search results page. Typing "ebay" and control-return results in
connection to www.ebay.com.

Not unless you've never been to ebay before.

> And if I want, how do I get the opposite result?

Add a space, or a / (adding a / will prevent Safari from searching)

So, for example, let's say there is a site abcd.com that I have never
gone to.

if I type:

abcd = google search for abcd
  abcd.com = loads abc.com
  abcd/ = loads abc.com

Now, let's say there's a site dcba.com that I HAVE been to before.

"dcba " = google search for dcba
  dcba - will load dcba.com

It does say that. Before any text is entered, the field says "Search
Google or enter an addresss" in grey text, which is replaced as soon as
you start typing something. (You can change the search engine via
Safari's preferences, if you prefer Bing or Yahoo.)

So don't complain, just don't use the option you don't like.

Yea, but - I don't see Apple doing that, unless said URL(s) are in
your history, or bookmarks.

> just because other browsers get it wrong doesn't mean apple should as
> well. it sucks in firefox too. the two fields are for different things.

It's not difficult to provide an option for a separate search field.
As opposed to irrevocably dumbing things down for everyone.

Anyway, this pales compared to the dimming of everything in a
URL following the hostname. What could whomever possibly have
been thinking when he/she did that...?! I call this sort of
stuff "Linux disease" - meaningless, gratuitous tweaks done
just for the hell of it, while serious, show-stopping bugs
are left untouched.

having an option would solve it.

that way, people can choose whichever way they prefer.

that's another stupid change.
