I am now on mavericks and still > unable to open these specific .mov files. That isn't normal, as a video taken on an iPhone is in H.264 format, which works fine in QuickTime Player 10.x. Save the email attachment as a file then open it in QuickTime Player. Use the Movie Inspector (Command-I) to see the technical details about the movie. The field of interest is the one which says "Format", which lists both the audio and video formats used in the movie. Tell us what that field says. It seems most likely that something is messed up your system which is preventing QuickTime Player 10.x from viewing video in H.264 format. Either that, or the file is corrupted in some way which QuickTime isn't complaining about. Can you view _other_ video files saved from iPhones or iPads, or is it just the ones from this family member which are causing problems? For that matter, can you use QuickTime Player to make a new movie recording from your camera, save that, and play it? That also uses H.264 so should work as well (or as badly) as a QuickTime movie from an iPhone. If this .MOV file wasn't from an iPhone, I'd suggest downloading and installing QuickTime Player 7, and seeing if that has any better luck: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923 -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

David, I emailed myself a video I took with my iPhone and it played, on my iMac, just fine. When I attempt to open the videos in question, I get the following window: QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_4421.MOV". To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More. When I click on tell me more I get a web page that is geared more towards the advanced user. I didn't get much out of it, but here it is. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3775?viewlocale =en_US I did a Get Info on one of the problem videos. Dimensions: 1080 × 1920 Codecs: H.264, AAC Color profile: HD (1-1-1) Duration: 00:44 Audio channels: 1 Encoding software: 7.0.4 BTW, I had her send me the videos twice, same problem. Is it time to give up?

Maybe its time for her to get a free Dropbox account and put the videos in the public folder and send you a URL for downloading. The evidence suggests the problem is that the delivery method (e-mail) isn't working, probably due to the file size. I suspect the movie file has been truncated leaving just enough header information for QuickTime to recognise what is supposed to be in the file and its playback duration, but the video/audio data is partly or completely missing. If so, this is likely to be due to a badly behaved mail server somewhere between your family member and your mail provider which is truncating the message (and therefore chopping off part of the attached file) rather than rejecting it outright for being too big. As a rough estimate, a 44 second video from a recent iPhone would be somewhat over 100 MB, which is significantly larger than many email servers will allow as an attachment size, especially once allowing for the standard encoding method for attachments, which would increase the size of the message by a further 33%. The correct solution (as suggested by Davoud in the parallel followup) is to use a web-based method of sending a large file, such as a free Dropbox account, or some other online service specifically intended to share video files (privately) and let you download your own copy rather than just watching it in a web browser (as Facebook apparently does). -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Dropbox is a great solution for this. The Mac integration makes it super easy to drop a file into the Dropbox folder, right-click on it, and have the Dropbox link copied into your paste buffer. Then just paste the link into an email. Alternately, she could do the same thing with an iCloud disk. But I don't know the sharing options or how to go forward. Google Drive is more kludgy to share links (more steps). -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... [I filter all Goggle Groups posts, so any reply may be automatically ignored]

File size, I think you're correct. Not being as computer literate as I would like, file size never came to mind. I have run into email file size issues in the past. Thanks

Can you not view the file's properties when you open it in QT (even though it won't actually play)? As for your download problem, I'm not on FB, so I don't know what the usual method is for downloading files from a FB page, but does Safari have some equivalent of Firefox's "Page Info" menu item? If so, you should be able to find the movie on that list and click "Save as..." If there isn't such an option in Safari, try it with Firefox. But that still won't help you play the file once you download it... Patty

Even if the FB download worked perfectly, FB's video encoding algorithms are horrible; they ruin the quality of HD video by blurring it. Another good way to facilitate the downloading of videos is to post them to a free Flickr account. The quality is far superior to FB. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm
