#19509 — Numbers Question

Something relatively easy I'm trying to do with Numbers won't work 3.01
that wouldn't work in the pre-Mavericks version either:

I select a cell, put a border around it, then try to remove that border
at a later time. Like, "things that need to be addressed": A few cells
get a few borders, save, print. Move on.

The next time in I want to make that border go away. No dice. I've
tried everything imaginable. In the newest version there is a pallet
of border options, an all-around border, just the left side, just the
right, and so on:

	http://grab.by/sgLY

There are also THREE icons indicating no border at all. Once bordered,
I can hit any of these three, or any of the others (just left, just
right). Nothing changes. Once done--permanent. My only option is to
"undo". But if I've made several changes, saved and so forth "undo" is
no longer possible.

I've found myself having to snatch the contents, delete the row and
then move the contents back in. Insane!

Can anybody explain how I might be able to border cells, and later
remove that cell--I'm stumped!

There's a popup menu to the left of that grid of borders. Click on it
and choose "No Border" from the menu. Then click on the border you
wish to apply. Note that if there's no solid line on a border icon in
the grid, that means that icon is inactive. So, for example, if you
chose "No border" in the menu, and then click on the icon with only a
black line in the left border, then the left border of the selected
cell or cells will be removed.

Recent experiments have wised me a bit:

The average cell has a default border ".25 pt" and dark blue (at least
with the default template). So I put an emphasis border (say "2 pt").
When I want to remove it I have to change the set up to .25 pt and dark
blue and re-do that cell with a border. So I have a cure for my
miseries.

Next question. In that icon palette I indicated I'm still confused.
There are apparently three *rows* of options, since the first row has
options indicating multiple cells, the next row indicating side
emphasis only and the third emphasizing the top/bottom lines: I still
don't get how the three blank options, one for each row, can be used
any kinda way?

Do you?

If you're a Numbers user perhaps you can explain where all the myriad
sorting options went. I can click on a column now and sort ascending or
descending. But I use to be able to pull up more complex sorting
processes: Multiple sets of sorts within columns. Did that go away
altogether? I can't believe I need a manual for these programs, but
they're a total rewrite!

Wow. "Find" seems to find in any of the spreadsheets rather than
looking in the current or giving options for expanded searches. That
can be confounding, and now time-consuming.

I'm wondering if I can get my old version of Numbers back. This is
some really irritating stuff.

You still have the old version; it's in the iWork folder.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I thought the iWork subfolder was
another one of my little sub-directory enclaves where they should be in
the Applications folder direclty so trashed the whole thing. I've since
Time-Machine'd it back.

I don't see any blank options. The top row contains an option to place
a line around every cell in the selection, an option to place a line
around the selection, and an option to place a line on all the interior
cells in the selection.

The second row contains an option to place a vertical line on the left
border of the selection, a vertical line on the left and right sides of
all the interior cells of the selection, and an option to place a
vertical line on the right border of the selection.

The third row contains an option to place a horizontal line on the top
border of the selection, an option to place horizontal lines on tops
and bottoms of all the interior cells of the selection, and an option
to place a horizontal line on the bottom of the selection.

Here's the display from the app as I see it:

I'm only modifying a single cell in the situation I'm using.

Nevertheless, I don't see anything different between the 3rd icon on
the first row and the 2nd icon on the 2nd and 3rd row in the image
indicated (above).

Ah, perhaps these additional lines you mention will be visible if I
select enough cells.

Yup--that's it. Nevertheless, no indication of how to remove
highlighting of borders no matter where they happen to be placed. Nor
to toggle them on and off but clicking the same one.

How would you think to simply remove a previously added border highlight?

The displays adjust to the content of the selection. If there are no
dark lines on an icon that means the icon is inactive, and clicking it
will not do anything.

Choose "Default style" from the popup that lets you choose the border
style. The default style is no borders.
