No, these guys:

I'm always amazed at what folk'll devote their time to.

Was the car *moving* at the time?

Why, now that you mention it, I believe it was.

(or something like that)

MacSOUP is able to save news posts in text form, and you can decode
binaries in the post using separate tools.

I haven't bothered with binary newsgroups for almost as long as I've
been using a Mac to read newsgroups, so its lack of built-in support for
binaries never bothered me.

Aye. If they get Unison working it suffice handily for binaries.
Otherwise I suggest Thunderbird.

Will Thunderbird combine multi-part binaries?

Totally understood about you and binaries. For my purposes, Unison
would be the option.

Thank you, I'll try Unison first. If it's free, I can always trash it, as I
have other programs I didn't want in the past, including, believe it or
not, an earlier PhotoShop and some other graphics programs I've forgotten
the names of 8-)

Unison has been sitting on the new laptop for over an hour, supposedly
loading Newgroups and not allowing anything except a spinner in the
middle of a mess of fat logos.

That sounds like a local issue.

I would recommend reading any of the 10 or 12 "Unison" or "Newreader"
threads posted in the past few weeks, or even months, here and in
comp.sys.mac.system. There always seems to be one running.

I use Unison, I think it works great. It doesn't do everything
imaginable, nor does it do everything the very very best. On the other
hand reading, responding and researching usenet posts isn't that
overwhelming a task. So I think Unison works perfectly. Before Unison
I used Thoth, before that Yet Another Newsreader. I tried and rejected
Hogwash, MTNW and a couple of others along the way for no reasons other
than my own personal ease of use.

I've been happy with NW and then MTNW for years. It did what I wanted,
which is fairly basic text-only. It doesn't work with Yosemite or I'd keep
using it on the new laptop.

For a "most comparable" switch, I might go for Thoth, and in fact when
my YANW got old I did go with Thoth: It was a pretty direct transition.

When Thoth got long in the tooth, I then considered MTNW a similar dead
end. U figured Unison would live longer than MTNW.

I assume "lived" for either is a moot point now.
