#20684 — Safari, Flash and the NY Times Website

Hi. I'm a subscriber to the digital version of the NY Times. I mostly
read it using Safari on my IMac. I am running Mavericks and the latest
version of Safari.

Anyway, I don't know if there are other NY Times readers in this group,
but I thought I'd post my problem anyway.

This is what's happening:

Apparently there is a large, Flash ad on the NY Times main page. For
some reason, the ad is not showing up when I view the page in Safari.
It is showing up when I view the page in Chrome. I'm not sure why it's
different Safari. I do have the Ad Blocker extension installed in
Safari but I also have it turned off.

Anyway, when I try to click on some of the headlines on the NY Times
page, the page thinks I'm clicking on the invisible Flash ad. If I
right-click on some of the headlines, I get the Flash contextual menu.

So, I can't access many of the articles on the page. Does anyone know
what is going on?

I will send a message to the NY Times, but the part of their website
for sending feedback is currently down.

Thanks.

Sky

i don't know why you want to see flash ads, but nevertheless, flash is
no longer included with mac os x. if you want flash, you must install
it yourself.

chrome has flash built-in, so flash content will work in chrome,
regardless of what os x has.

what many people do is not install flash at all, then just use chrome
for the sites that require it.

Yes, I know. I've had Flash installed on Safari for a long time. But
I've never had issues with it and the NY Times website until today.

When you see browser-dependent differences, it's usually because

(a) you have a plugin or exception on a browser that changes the
behavior for that browser

(b) RARELY, a site won't do multiple platform and browser regression on
their site and it will render or appear different because of actual
browser bugs or implementations.

I suggest you remove ALL extensions from Safari and try the NYT site
again. If you still don't see the Flash (is it REALLY Flash or HTML5?),
then you may have a case of (b) happening rather than (a).

Okay, I'll try that and report back.

And, yes, it's Flash, not HTML5. I know the difference. When I
right-click on the ad in Chrome, or on the headlines in Safari, I get
the Flash contextual menu -- the one that says "About Adobe Flash
Playe..." at the bottom.

Okay, I removed Adblocker from Safari. Now the ads are appearing on the
NYTimes website, which is fine because now I can click on the headlines
with no issues.

I this case, it is a difference in the browsers.

Chrome shows flash by default, and has its own Flash engine installed in
the app bundle.

Safari, depending on version, does NOT show flash by default and the
system may not even have Flash installed.
