What's the difference between someone who chooses to pretend to be
stupid and pretends to be stupid and one who just pretends to be
stupid?

There is something that you can do that is foolproof, if it is very
important to communicate to a particular person, namely load the
images to a server and give him or her the web address in the body of
the email. It is very simple and quick to do, it is not quite as
simple as dragging a pic to an email compose field but not that much
more trouble. It has the distinct advantage that you only load it once
and then it is available to everyone you email from then if you give
them the address. If you need help on how to do this, give a shout.

As a Xmas present to the group and partly to illustrate the above, I
have a folder for just pics on a server and here is one pic that
illustrates an idea I had for scroll bar that was a bit different, I
emailed a few IT companies with the idea but no one seemed to take it
up. I got *letters of rejection*.

<http://dorayme.netweaver.com.au/justPics/wigglyscrolling.png>

I cannot think why my ideas are so quickly slapped down?

I have a different problem with Windows users. Once in a while I
want to send a screen grab to a Windows user. Shift-Command-4
produces a JP2 file and the Grab app produces a TIFF. The Windows
user says he can't view either of those formats, so I have to
convert them to JPGs for him.

This is a nuisance.

When I use Shift-Command-4 it creates a PNG file. I'm using SL, has it
changed?

he can't view a tiff?

anyway, set the default screen capture format to jpeg.

tinkertool will do it, which does the defaults write command whose
parameter i don't remember.

Thanks. I have an old copy of TinkerTool and it did the job, but I
was moved to download the version for Mountain Lion.

I don't know what a JP2 file is (not some sort of JPEG?), but on
both the 10.6 Mac I have at home and the 10.8 one I'm using at work,
Shift-Cmd-4 generates PNG files.

jpeg 2000, a format that never caught on

unless it's set to a different format.

I didn't know that you could change the format of C-S-4 files.
Well then, that solves the OP's problem.

No, JP2 is the Windows TLE for JPEG 2000.

Yeah, the OP obviously changed his default at some point.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png

Should fix it.

Shift-Cmd-4 puts both PNG and TIFF on the clipboard. What Mail pastes
in, I don't know. Windows out-of-the-box handles both with no problem.

If he's not lying to you, then someone has changed his file associations.

Command-shift-4 puts a PNG (or whatever format you have set the system
to use) on the desktop; command-control-shift-4 puts the image on the
clipboard.

I would send email with embedded JPGs and the receiver couldn't read
them. They were to small or unreadable. So I switched to using Gmail to
send that sort of thing to people. Works much better.
