No joy. The web site is dead and the domain name is for sale.
Wikipedia says that the program hasn't been for sale since 2013.

Somewhere / someone will still have the download. Maybe MacUpdate or
the Wayback Machine website archive (http://web.archive.org).

Mine is an ancient version 1.5.4 is from 2002, so probably not worth
uploading even if I could find the original archive / installer (it's
not in my normal folder where I keep old downloads, so must have come
off one of the many magazine CDs I've collected over the years).

I'm not sure what the last version released was, but this link for a
newer-than-mine version 1.8.4 from 2009 still seems to work (2.2MB):
http://www.macorchard.com/thoth/thoth-184-x.dmg
which may or may not work with OS X 10.9.

The problem of course is that it needs a registration code. The newer
version may still work with the old registration codes. Since the
official website no longer exists, I can't see any problem using
someone else's registration code - I'll have to find the one I used.

The latest version of Thoth was 1.9.1.2, I think. There might have
been 2 versions... a trial and a full version.

I have the zip archive of 1.9.1... but I never got around to
registering it. When I finally did - it was gone.

I wanted to use it, since it was more like MT-Newswatcher than anything else.

I'm stuck using the older version of Unison 1.8.1, and compared to
MT-NW, it pales in comparison.

that won't help since it can't be registered.

Ah, that's amusing and ironic. Someone should make a usenet newsreader

I downloaded VM Fusion and imported the Parallels VM into it. Fusion
too uses a full CPU. I think it's something dumb like OS/2
constantly polling the keyboard in a tight loop and using up all of
a CPU even when otherwise idle.

Fusion. Running WinXp, Ubuntu and Suse concurrently. They can each have
various idle apps, and the CPU cores are idle as well (other than the
usual background stuff)

See here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ysg1gl62rgh0e1u/2014-T4%20personnel%20data.xlsx?dl=0

The CPU is at at about 3.25% (26% total over / 8 cores). And that was
immediately after loading all three OS' (concurrently).

As I write this it has calmed down further still... about 15% overall
spread over 8 cores. (including HT cores in that) - so less than 2%
overall CPU load.

Some applications are notoriously bad for being resource hogs - some
like Parallels / Fusion are by semi-necessity, while others like web
browsers, Flash, or anything from Microsloth and a lot of Adobe's stuff
are by buggy and bad programming.

Even teh Finder and Mac OS X can benefit from an occasional reboot to
get rid of accumulated garbage.

Fusion is definitely not a resource hog.

I usually have Excel and Word loaded most of the time and they don't
affect anything when they're not being used. The only annoying thing is
"Open Recent" and Excel/Word pinwheel waiting for attached drives to
spin up.

Indeed. Every 30 - 60 days seems to be fine.

I also drives me crazy when they hunt down the drop-down menu trying to
find "Quit" and then clicking it, or "Print". These, instead of the
long-time hotkeys. Crazy!

I bet they accidentally quit apps far less often than you do.

There's nothing wrong with using the menus. That is why they are there.

I tend to use CMD-Tab;CMD-Q, but I'm left-handed.

There's nothing wrong with picking your nose in public, but it
sometimes bugs people. This is what bugs me. There are worse things:
Cancer, car accidents, spilled paint--the list is too long to
ennumerate. But I thought the *nature* of this quibbling was about
quibbling over the mundane. Who cares if people leave programs "open"?
 Ant does.
