The movie "Black Rock" was a set, built one mile north of Lone Pine
Station, which was part of the Southern Pacific Railroad "Jawbone
Branch". None of that exists any more. If you are interested use the
coordinates 36.634122,-118.39928 in whatever mapping app you are using
and it will drop a pin right on the location of the former cross road
town "Black Rock". As I said all the boulders, big rocks and blind
canyons are on the otherside, west of Hwy 395, they are still all there.

You won't find it. It was built as a set past Lee Vining on the North
Shore of Mono Lake off Hwy 167. It was demolished after filming was
completed as part of the aggrement with the State Park Service.

However, if you want to see a true Western ghost town, head north of
Lee Vining on Hwy 395 to the road turning off to the East which will
take you to Bodie State Historic Park and the ghost town of Bodie.

Good luck with that one.

If I was not prepared to have my naive hopes and dreams shattered, I
would not be here on usenet.

Thanks for this, I will note this and report back in a few months if
we made it there. We have a few of those sorts here in Australia,
maybe on a smaller scale though, especially old mining ones. And some
towns are *close* to being ghostly but not quite there.

Regarding Mono Lake I assume you'll visit Bodie. It will certainly be
to your liking.

You can 'see' Black Rock from Burning Man. Just so anyone doesn't get
the wrong idea, I don't attend Burning Man. I'm just very familiar with
the whole area being discussed. Yeah. It ain't the same Black Rock, but
it does exist.

The movie Black Rock is what I was refering to. Probably the only
remaining building used in the movie, is the old, Lone Pine Depot
building on the abandoned Southern Pacific "Jawbone Branch". That is
now a private home about two miles south of where the movie set was
located.
Since you are in Reno, just take a drive down 395 to Lone Pine and see
for yourself. I'd meet you there, but I am over on the coast, and I
have plans for the next few weeks.

Anyway the old Lone Pine Depot is located at:
36.61980321527675,-118.0407564812928

...and the position of the depot and the former site of the movie set
can be seen marked just North of Lone Pine.

I played a football game in Lone Pine in the early sixties. That's as
far south as I've been on 395. It's also a thousandth of the way to the
Moon from Reno which is a long way for a old man.

Rare as we are by my experience, our name is making a comeback! We both
knew that Nimoy couldn't carry it forever.

But Dr. McCoy carried in the future.

You outgeeked me. I honestly forgot McCoy's first name. No wonder I
loved the show. Shame on me!

I suspect that the Nevadan, and Californian Leonards in this NG predate
Dr. McCoy, but not the revered Nimoy.
That said, my Grandfather was William Leonard, and always went by "Len".

I believe there's a character named Leonard on "The Big Bang Theory."

...and that, given the nature of that show, was probably a geeky salute
to Nimoy & McCoy.

Absolutely.

I just watched part of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly", and just
realized then where the Tuco in Breaking Bad came from.

Stop by Reno and look me up. I'll show you the exact private airfield
where Fossey's living feet last left land. It's about a hundred miles
south of here after twenty miles of lonely dirt road. Another twenty
miles and you hit the famous ghost towns of Aurora and then Bodie.
There can be no thrill comparable to having this adventure with a
scruffy stranger ;-)

Yup! See what it costs to have a Rolex band rebuilt.
I have my father's 50 year old Oyster Datejust in stainless + gold. The
original band was in need of a rebuild, that ran $850. New the watch
cost about $600, and today with the rebuilt band I have been told it is
worth $8000.
