They don't use "Quit", but the window's red X button so they have tons
of softwares still running in the background. They wonder why their Mac
OS X is so slow due to low resources. And yes, I told the users zillions
of times about it. They keep thinking Windows. :/

Running many applications at once isn't necessarily a problem. It only becomes a problem if one or more of those applications uses more RAM than is available or lots of CPU - both of which can be checked by opening /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor, and looking at the little graphs at the bottom of the window. If CPU load is high, for instance, then you can easily look at the CPU tab of the window (sorted by % CPU) to ind out which applications are using the most CPU resources. If memory pressure is high, then you can look at the Memory tab (sorted by Memory) to see which applications are using the most memory resources. If neither is high, then sluggishness is bing caused by something other than that. A malfunctioning startup drive can cause sluggishness even when the CPU and memory are relatively low in usage, regardless of the number of applications that are running. A network issue can cause other types of sluggishness regardless of the number of applications that are running as well. It really depends on what's going on at the time. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

I haven't looked for Mac OS X, but there used to be a couple of background applications for Mac OS 9 and older which properly quit an application when you closed the last document window ... but that's an annoyance for users who close the document their working on when they want to start a whole new blank one.

MacBook Pro w/16 GB RAM, if that makes a difference. The only slow part is switching to Excel; it can take 10 to 12 seconds of the spinning rainbow before it's ready to do anything.

Teach them CMD-Q.
Well. Maybe.
I taught my SO that and she rarely closes programs. OTOH, she doesn't
use much more than Chrome, Excel, Word, iTunes and Message anyway. Last
"boot" was at nearly 80 days from the prior boot. 2 GB of RAM /
Mavericks. On an MBA that shares its memory with the graphics "card".
So, it ain't that important.
Programs with nothing to do (waiting) don't use enough CPU to be
noticeable. I've had this iMac (24 GB) running with well over a hundred
apps (every App in the Apps folder (incl. utilities)) and with nothing
to actually do the CPU meters didn't show above a few percent.
That included at least one (and possibly three) VM's.

Then it must be because the system I am running in the VM is OS/2. I am using it right now to post to the news group. OS/2 reports that it is using about 1% of a CPU. Activity Monitor reports that OS/2 (actually eCS 2.0) is using 99.8% of a CPU. 99% of a CPU is disappearing someplace into the interface between the OS and the VM. -- John Varela

Wow, IBM's OS/2 and still supported by VMware? I remember briefly seeing
(not using) back in college's computer science labs in the mid (19)90s.
What do you still use it for though?

Which newsreader is that? What is special about it compared to others
like Tin, Pan, SeaMonkey/Mozilla's, Agent, etc.?

I haven't time to go into the details, but let me say that Hogwasher came very close to being acceptable, with only one problem. It couldn't handle threads with a reply depth of more than something like 16 responses nor threads with more than a few hundred total responses (512?). I am a regular on alt.usage.english, and was at the time also a regular on alt.folklore.computers. Both those groups often have threads that run 20 or 30 responses deep and upwards of 1,000 total posts, and occasionally more. Hogwasher choked on that. I had started using Hogwasher not long after the author stopped maintaining it. -- John Varela

Ah. Can it do binaries too?

I had started using > > Hogwasher not long after the author stopped maintaining it. > > Ah. Can it do binaries too? No. Since there are no longer any binaries on Usenet that's not a problem, is it? I have more time tonight so I'll go into more detail. The main things I like about ProNews/2 are that it presents everything threaded in an indented format, it automatically opens only threads and subthreads with new posts, it clearly labels what has been downloaded and what has been read, and it takes me straight to the first new posting. It facilitates reading only subthreads of interest -- for example, if I abandon a subthread that has drifted to something dull like how best to brew tea (as happened recently on alt.usage english), I can leave those posts unread. The next time I read news, the unread posts preceding the new ones make it obvious that I had abandoned this subthread, and so page down past all that until I see a new post following a read post. It's a little buggy with regard to display but nothing serious. The main thing wrong with it is that the filtering is primitive. Since News.Individual.Net has excellent filtering, that's not been a problem. -- John Varela

The pay-for Usenet providers do still have the binaries groups on their lists ... although whether there's much traffic in them is a different question.
