#18452 — iTunes Home Sharing

SubjectiTunes Home Sharing

So, out of curiosity, I just loaded iTunes 11.1.1 on a secondary
computer. (I use iTunes 10.7 and Snow Leopard regularly because I don't
need all the "improvements"). I notice they have changed "Home
Sharing" to require an Apple ID and limit it to 5 computers. WTF?
Previously it just used standard file sharing and you could see any
computer on your network.

I don't need Apple policing my network and what I am playing. I'm
getting sick of this "cloud" nonsense and companies spying on me under
the guise of usability and flexibility.

Library sharing should still be there.

Home Sharing is synchronizing the libraries of multiple computers via
Apple. I tried it a couple of times and found it to be too buggy.

I usually share my home music library as a password protected network
volume. iTunes can play that directly when it doesn't have library
scanning bugs. When iTunes doesn't work, I just copy the files to my
phone and play from that. It's not an iPhone so it has 80GB of storage
and an sftp/rsync app that's much easier to use than iTunes.

?? I've been using this on five Macs since whenever it was that it
first became an iTunes feature. It has never failed to synchronize
automatically--so long as the content is from the iTunes store.

?? "iTunes doesn't work" does not compute. It just works. "...easier to
use than iTunes" does not compute. Buy some content, it downloads into
iTunes, propagates to other computers automatically, copies to iOS
thingies if I tell it to. Having to click the mouse to tell it to sync
content to an iOS thingie is not my idea of hard to use.

I've found that it doesn't recognize some songs at the source or
destination. It caused missing songs and a huge mess of duplicates.

The songs shouldn't need to come from the iTunes store. Those that do
still hit the bugs.

Ever since that pathetic "gapless playback" hack came out, iTunes has
suffered problems where it randomly re-scans parts of the library on the
foreground UI thread. If your music is on a local hard drive you'll
notice that iTunes feels very sluggish or the beachball flickers. If
your music is on a remote network volume, it continuously shows the
beachball until it is force-quit. Music videos make it worse.

How about iTunes Radio servers? iTunes repeats the same song up to
three times in a row then the station quits working for a day or two.
Out comes the cellphone for Pandora.

I am having a lot of problems with iTunes 11, but I've never had a
problem with Home Sharing.

I dunno, with iTunes 11, the app beachballs after an hour o so no matter
what.

Haven't had that happen. Do you 'star' additional songs? OTOH, I'm only
using iTunes Radio on my phone.
