#21502 — Problems with mail.app and Mavericks

A good friend of mine with whom I email almost everyday just switched
from a browser email to mail.app. She is using a gmail account and is
running the latest version of Mavericks on a MacBook Air. We are having
some problems and maybe someone here can help.

1) If I send her an attachment, say a jpg and she uses the reply
button, the entire attachment is sent back to me instead of just a
careted, placeholder notification like <xxx.jpg>. How do we turn this
off so we just get the notification.

2) I sent her a small tiff graphic (about 200K) and she could not
get it to display or open. The attachment was only displayed as a tiny
rectangle, and she could not do anything with it.

Does this have anything to do with "inline" attachments (whatever they
are)? She has MS Office. Maybe she should just switch from Mail to
Outlook.

TIA

Uncheck this menu item: Edit menu/Attachments/Include Original
Attachments in Reply

Strange. I just sent myself a TIFF file, and was able to view it in
the message with no problem.

Thanks Michelle. The problem with the tiff attachment seems to have
been a one shot deal. Thanks for the location to turn off returned
attachments. I just looked in preferences, expecting it to be there.

Odd, I've never seen that and usually have to specifically choose to
include the attachment in the very rare cases that's been desirable.

<looks around>

Under the Edit menu there is an Attachments submenu. One of the choices
there is to include attachments in replies, she must have it set to be
on (checked).

Windows Friendly attachments should be checked in that same submenu.

Normally clicking the square will cause the attachment to download. If
not, there si a hairline ruler between the header and the body of the
email. When you move the mouse in that area, a few buttons appears (a
trash can, some arrows, and a paperclip. The Paperclip will give you
access to the attachments nd let you open each one or even send them all
into iphoto if you wish.

Well, I have a pretty low opinion of Outlook, so I'd say no.

I haven't your issues, but Mail.app has this problem where it will
suddenly stop evaluating rules until I quit and restart it since I
upgraded to Mavericks. It's a real pain in the ass because I subscribe
to a bunch of mailing lists. It'd be even worse if I didn't get them
all in digest mode!
