It's been much longer than that; it goes back to the year 1688, when the English Parliament was made superior to the sovereign as a result of the Glorious Revolution, if not even further back than that. Of course, the parties involved have changed over time.

Nope, I never met him, but his name is a bit familiar. BTW, my team won its division in the knock out team of four event. It's a single-elimination tournament, so we had to win three matches without losing any.

This morning I played in another knockout team event; we won the first round, but were eliminated in the second. This afternoon, I played in a pairs event, and we took first place in our division. I was a bit off; we should have placed in the next higher division. If people are discovered gambling on the side, they'll get Pete Rosed from the ACBL.

Put that together with the fact that (at least up to that point in the video) he only talks about terrorists they're after. Yes, he mentions cybersecurity as well, but my understanding of his words is that the people behind those attacks are in the end just terrorists as well. Best regards, Michael

He said, "We're going after terrorists with those programs". That in no way means that he said or implied that the NSA aims only at terrorists. He was referring to two specific programs out of many programs that the NSA has.

Obama himself in fact.

They follow directions--known as tasking--from above. > They should always consider the harm done if this gets public (as it now > has), and the loss in trust the US has to bear by that. Interesting point. It's not the alleged spying that is the problem, but knowledge of the spying by a public that is poorly informed and naïve. You don't seriously believe that any of the recent revelations surprised any European leaders, do you? It's just that these things are not discussed in polite company except when a traitor like Snowden comes along and forces these unpleasant subjects on us. > Or, to put it the other way around: What would you say, what would POTUS > say if the German (or French or Spanish or ...) secret service tapped > into his phone calls, noticing who he was talking to, possibly even > listening to every word said? I really wouldn't expect that anybody in > the US would take that lightheartedly... ;-) Realistically. Suddenly every European is an expert on NSA, but knows nothing of what his own SIGINT service is doing. You're spying on us, you're spying on your neighbors, they're spying on you. Ho hum. And you're still way off base on two counts: why the USG would be interested in the private communications of your average non-terrorist in Europe, and also the math. SIGINT processing is labor-intensive undertaking. It is not possible to monitor large quantities of voice communications even in English, much less another language. NSA would need to employ the entire human population to monitor all of the targets ascribed to it by wildly wrong press reporting. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm
