If there is a Facebook expert in this group maybe you can help me. I've been sent a video via Facebook but I don't know how to get it from Facebook message to my desktop. I have mac osx and safari/google chrome/firefox. Any ideas would be appreciated. BTW, the video was first sent to my regular email but I wasn't able to open it. So I had it sent to me via a Facebook message and I was able to view it. I would still like to get it off FB and onto my desktop. Thanks.

Facebook is a "walled garden" where they want control of everything so it can be tracked and turned into revenue. As a rule, I tend to put stuff from FB as a low priority. But, of course, YMMV. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... [I filter all Goggle Groups posts, so any reply may be automatically ignored]

She originally sent the video to my regular email address but I was not able to open it (a black screen and no audio but it would run in real time). I have the latest QuickTime and my Mac OS is not the latest (10.7.5) but I've never had an issue with any other video. So she suggested that she send it to my FB page. I can see the video fine from there but now it appears that is the only place I can view it?

I suggest going to the apple store, logging into facebook on one of their systems and viewing the video that way. With 10.7.5, you may not have the right codec or be able to play the video regardless of how it was sent to you. If you still have the original email with the video, try viewing it with VLC. It can play must about anything. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... I downloaded VLC and I'm still unable to open the video. My first thought is a corrupted file coming from the sender yet it plays fine when sent to me on FB? The file name starts with IMG and ends with .MOV also it is sent from a macbook pro to my imac. I watched the video on her MBP and it was fine. I may have to give up on this one. The video isn't critical (my niece and nephew at play) but I would love to get in on my computer.

I watched the video on her MBP and it was fine. .mov is a container format and the actual encoding of the video can be just about anything. the way to find out is open the video in quicktime player and choose get properties. if you don't have the appropriate codec installed, t won't play.

The video isn't critical (my niece and > nephew at play) but I would love to get in on my computer. With such an old version of the OS, you'll probably stuck. Newer versions of the OS have video Codecs supported that your version does not. I'm sure if you downloaded diagnostic software like MediaInfo https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32313/mediainfo It runs on 10.6.8 or later and will tell you what video is in the container file and what codec was used to encode it and the audio tracks and their codec as well. If you don't have the codec to play the video (and, shockingly, VLC can't play it either), it's your call on how much time you want to spend on solving the problem. You'll learn a lot about video formats and what's supported. My guess is that when it was uploaded to FB, it got encoded using the codec they support. If it was put up to youtube, vine, or instagram, the same thing would happen. The file by itself may be beyond your systems' ability to play it back without lots of help. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... I'm sure if you downloaded diagnostic software like MediaInfo no need, when quicktime player can list what codecs it has.

Is it possible that there's a codec missing? the video will open whether or not the appropriate codec is there. i've been doing that for years. if the appropriate codec is not there, all that's needed is check to see what codec it actually needs, then download and install it. after that, reopen the movie and watch it.

When I open the file using QuickTime it appears to open. A screen pops up and the video appears to run. The two videos are about a minute. The problem is no video, black screen and no audio. In the next week I may upgrade to the latest OS. I've been reluctant because the current os "ain't broke". The last time I upgraded os I lost use of my favorite wp app Apple Works. Maybe updating from 10.7.5 to the latest os will help. I do know the macbook pro that it was sent from is running the latest mac os. How do I find the properties, or codec, of a file from QT? I don't see any kind of "get info" in QT.

I went to the apple forum. After reading the thread (see link below) I thought going to QT Pro would help. I bought the download, but was unable to locate or access the download. I called apple, and although my AppleCare has expired they tried to help. They too were unable to locate the download; they were able to get me a refund from iTunes. While I had apple on the phone I explained my dilemma with .mov files and she felt upgrading to Maverick would solve the problem. I will give that a try and see if that fixes the problem. Apple thought the problem may stem from Safari and upgrading the OS would also upgrade Safari. I didn't realize Safari 6.1.2 was ancient, but it is more than a month old :-) I'll let the group know the outcome once I upgrade the OS. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2725504?start=30&tstart=0

The conclusion is I'm out of luck. I installed 10.9.2 hoping that would allow me to view .mov and it does not. Applecare's only suggestion was moving up to mavericks. Is there a better QT player than the stock player?

Imac OS 10.9.2 QT Player 10.3 Safari 7.0.2 Warren I'll give you the highlights. Family member sent me a couple videos (.mov). She took them with an iphone. They play perfectly on her mac book pro. I received them via email but unable to open them. She sent them to my FB page, as a message, and I can see them fine (on FB) but I'm unable to download them from FB. Called Apple. They said Mavericks should fix it. I am now on mavericks and still unable to open these specific .mov files.
