As loyal a fan as I am to QuicKeys, five years and 3 OS's later, they
haven't had no updates and I now assume they never will.

Anyone have a viewpoint on iKey? It's by PlumAmazing Software and I
think they're Copypaste Pro software is excellent. iKey looks very
good. Nothing will do everything that QuicKeys does, but I'm hoping
for a combination of utilities that will more-or-less replicate it.

Any other automation programs that others are zealots for?

So you're saying they've had plenty of updates?

(Sorry, couldn't resist. : )

I hear a lot of people like Keyboard Maestro.

Yup: I knew there was another one to consider. iKey does look way deep, though:

iKey anyone? Anyone?

I've been using iKey for years, but only to launch applications from the
keyboard and select a few menu items from specific apps, i.e. I haven't
ever really used much of the macro stuff.

It's dependable, reliable as very easily understandable how to use if
you are a former user of QuicKeys like me.

I'd recommend you try it out.

I use Keyboard Maestro myself. It works well and is powerful. The manual
is good, but I think many more worked examples would be useful.
Fortunately, the developer and people on the forums are very helpful.

I don't know anything about iKey

When Quickeys looked like they were on life support (shortly after they
"advertised" for a MacOS developer because theirs had died), I started
looking at iKey. It did most of what I wanted--remapping menu functions
to keyboard shortcuts. But I had problems with a version or for some
reason looked into Keyboard Maestro because it did more than iKeys, even
though I don't use 50% of the features.

I wonder who wrote Stokely's business plan (they're the ones that bought
Quickeys from Prairie software). They looked for the longest time for a
MacOS developer but I but they never found someone who'd be willing to
work near their offices for anything less than $100K/year, which
probably more than what the company makes in annual sales.

Does Quickeys run on 10.9?

That should be "Startly".

Yes. I have only found one oddity. Once you load the QuicKeys editor
summoning a SoftKey palettes starts getting wonky and goes into some
kind of "wait" state where you have to click the "continue macro" key.
Other macros and such will work but it gets wonky in this way once
you've opened the editor.

I wrote a little Applescript that quits and restarts QuicKeys so that
once I've finished editing macros--not too frequently--I can make
everything work right again. It's not a big deal, particularly since
may QuicKeys users don't usee the SoftKey options.

The intoroduction of Mavericks killed CopyPaste Pro for a while,
they've not updated it. But QuicKeys interferes with the operation of
CopyPaste Pro. A simple copy function, of text or image or whatever,
just won't work with QuicKeys running. So now there are to issues for
me.

I've just spent some time with both iKeys and Keyboard Maestro, and
though they'll do plenty of what I need, there are still many QuicKeys
macros I use for which there is no replication in these programs,
unfortunately.

I sure wish Startly would hire a fix-it programmer to put them back in
good stead. The whole idea of working "near their offices" is likely
based on their experience with their now deceased programmer who worked
from home during his waning days, which he apparently kept secret from
the company. At least that's my sense of it.

It's amazing, considering everything the program can do, which
mind-boggling, that they would rather just bleed the last few dollars
out of it that they can. I can't imagine they are selling many new
copies in its current state.

Oh well. Nothing lasts forever.

I am using Quickeys on 10.9 for macros within BBEdit. When I first
installed it on a new (to me) 10.9 system it didn't work. However, I
was able to find the work-around: you need to go to Get Info on the
application and select the "Prevent App Nap" checkbox. I think
Maverick's new "App Nap" was disabling Quickeys, causing it to ignore
key presses that it should be listening to.

I remember reading that on the forum, but never experienced it. I
don't even know what App Nap is!

It is one of the new features in Mavericks. It puts applications in a
"nap" state if they do not have any visible windows and isn't otherwise
doing something productive, such as playing music, etc. Information
here:

<http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/>

I would guess that in the case of Quickeys, the OS is mistakenly
putting the application in a non-responsive state and it can no longer
respond to key presses.

I have a similar problem with the scroll ring on one of my two
Kensington scroll balls. The one under Lion works fine; the one under
Mavericks does not: it doesn't do anything at first, then scrolls too
far when it finally wakes up.
