Ok, so I'm looking to replace my old iPod classic (80GB, same as current
gen 160GB model I think - they've not changed the classic for years now,
right?) and shuffle (1GB aluminum clip model).

My classic's battery is almost dead so it now only serves to hold my
music, podcasts and video for playing in Windows when I dual boot on my
iMac. I love the classic for it's robust design and huge storage, but I
would like to be able to have productivity and game apps, and watch
video on a larger screen while on the go, as I can with the touch.
Without a classic I will miss being able to take everything I own with
me, though :-(

My 1GB shuffle is still fine (like the original Game Boy, it's built
like a tank - been dropped, kicked across concrete after being dropped,
dumped in bags and left to be jostled about with other contents, with
hardly a scratch to show for it), but I wish I had just bit more storage
- I sometimes don't get to my home Mac to autofill it for a couple days,
and then I start getting too many tunes repeated. Plus I like the idea
of the pedometer feature of the latest nano, as I exercise a lot by
walking. I also like the idea of being able to play my podcasts with the
nano, which the Shuffle is no good for. A nano would expand my options
without being as large and cumbersome (relatively speaking) as the
touch, while exercising.

Right now I'm thinking I should get either the 64GB touch plus a new 2GB
shuffle; or the nano and the lowest cost lowest storage touch I can
find, probably a refurbished older model to stay under budget as the
nano would cost a lot more than a shuffle.

The reason being I have a limited budget as I said, I really like the
shuffle's ability to one click autofill with a random selection of music
given it can only hold a fraction of my library, and I want to be able
to use apps on a mobile device that isn't a shitty low cost Android
phone (not that all Android phones are shitty, but the good ones and
coveted iPhones here in NZ and the data plans they're sold with are
horribly expensive).

I guess I could simulate the autofill on a nano or touch by creating a
playlist that limits by size and updating it before I sync my iPod.

I also suppose I can live without having everything in my library with
me on the go for extended trips and the like.

Side note: I'm not thrilled with the lack of an ambient light sensor and
auto-brightness on the 5th gen iPod touch, after playing with friend's
4th gens and moving between dim indoors and bright outdoors, with nary a
problem seeing the screen. Is it very annoying without this on the 5th
gen?

Thoughts? Advice? Should I even be looking at non-iPods? Is any of the
above not going to work in OS X 10.6.8 with iTunes 10?

TIA,
 Jamie Kahn Genet

P.S. I'm also thinking this time I won't bother with cases for anything
above a shuffle (though I have seen shuffle cases! Madness :-D ), only a
screen film. I don't care so much about scratches, so long as it's not
the screen of course, and could do without added bulk. What do you guys
reckon? Does the touch need any added protection for it's cameras? Or is
that just me being paranoid?

Hmm. Tough one, and it's hard to say without knowing your use. The
shuffle is great because it's, as you know, solid as a tank.

The question really is, how much music do you really have to have with
you? I still use an ancient iPod G3 (30GB I think) which has plenty of
space for the music I want in my car.

> I also suppose I can live without having everything in my library with

Some people go very 'deep' into their playlists frequently, others do it
far less often. What I do with my iPhone is simply use the icloud sync
to listen to music (or on occasions, to download a bunch of music when
I'm going to be out of WiFi range).

My ipHones, since the I got my 4, have not had cases on them. I don't
have scratches ont eh screen, and only a few dings on the edges. I have
one very small spot on the iPhone 4 from where I dropped it on a concret
sidewalk (I jumped up and the phone slid out of my shirt pocket). It is
very slight and no one can see it until I point it out.

But no one else has your usage pattern and can't really answer for what
you need/want.

It's nice to have it all for long trips and the like. I don't care about
walking around the shore for exercise, on a bus for an hour, or being
away overnight, and the like. My shuffle has been great for exercise as
it's so lightweight it's no hassle.

I go deep into my collection if, to use a recent example, I'm in the US
on a road trip between states for the better part of a day. Or if I just
want to pull out the perfect track for the occasion.

Something for random play during exercise, something for apps and 'net
access on the go (realising an iPhone would be best for that, but
they're too damn pricy here in NZ - either unlocked with a cheap plan or
locked and dirt cheap with a very pricy plan that more than makes up for
that :-( ) that will hold a substantial portion of my media, though
that's optional.

Ideally I'd like a new 160GB classic, 2GB shuffle (or nano if it's not
much more cumbersome) and a touch. I always wished Apple would make a
touch with a large HD. Oh well. My budget however limits me to two
devices at most - a shuffle or nano (with corresponding budget drop for
the second device) plus a touch (or new classic as an outlier
possibility - but I am keen on a touch) seems like it would fulfill most
of my needs.

There are wireless external storage devices that will let you store
more music (as well as other things), but of course it does mean
carrying around and recharging two boxes.

unless the second box is in the cloud.

only 1 box.

Where would I find WiFi out walking around the shore, or in transit,
etc? No, I need to stick with reliable physical syncing of my devices
with my Mac, for the majority of my music storage and transfer needs.
Only if I was looking to buy an iPhone or a cellular hotspot for my
devices and I could afford the very expensive data here in NZ, would
keeping my music in 'the cloud' (I still think it's a silly term - why
not just say 'online' like we used to?) be a possibility.

maybe not on the shore but planes, trains and some automobiles have
wifi.

Well take my word for it I can't rely on WiFi here for reliable enough
internet access, widespread enough to in turn rely on cloud storage of
my music. Sure I'll have WiFi some places, but I'd be rather unhappy to
be without my music the rest of the time.

For "cloud" access, Telecom NZ have set up public wi-fi kiosks in
various places, but you're right about it being ridiculously priced and
/ or low data caps, plus you would keep losing the signal as you moved
out of their range. (It was free during the trial period, but I think
that ended yesterday.) Then there's the "free" wi-fi at many cafes,
McDonalds, etc., but of course you have to buy something first.

Some of the wireless external storage boxes have in-built wi-fi to
create their own local network with your iOS device, so you don't need
any other equipment. They too are quite expensive though.

Starbucks, McDonald's. Most every coffee shop. Many grocery stores.
Panera. Lots of shipping districts. Restaurants.

I don't exercise through shops *confused* Nor transit through them. I

some places require it, but either way, if you don't, your mooching.

No, places like that often have WiFi here too, though they're not quite
as ubiquitous as in the US, I'll use them as I happen upon them. I just
can't rely on them for steady access to data in the 'cloud'. Not unless
I want to be without access for much of my time exercising and in
transit.

Aye.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

If it's only exercising you want, then you could always join a Mall
Walking Group and then you should be in range of the free wi-fi at
Muffin break, Telecom / Vodafone stores, etc. ;-)

Yes, Mall Walking Groups do exist - there's one at Milford Shopping
Mall and Westfield Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore (and I think
Westfield Albany as well) - but they are mostly older ladies and mums
with prams.
