In 2005 I bought a Reebok watch made by Timex. I wore it 10 years. I’ve
never had another watch serve so well for so long. Once when I needed a
new band, I spotted a watch for 66¢ at a convenience store. It was made
for a little girl, but I thought, “Why not!”

Attached to my larger watch, the little girl’s band was long enough, and
it was of good quality. It looked weird on me because it was vivid pink
and pale blue with yellow flowers. I soon loved it for a practical
reason. If I took it off to do a job, I had no trouble spotting it, even
if I’d dropped it in tall brush. The men in the neighborhood accepted
it, but their wives didn’t. One of them told her husband to buy me a
black band. To keep the peace, I gave up my girly band.

Eventually the o-ring under the cover stretched. It no longer sealed
properly, and sweat ruined the watch. I replaced it with a Timex. It
looked great on Amazon, but the tall numbers were so thin and close
together, and the background so dark, that it was hard to read. When I
got ready to press Start to time an event, it would switch back to the
time of day. The band was clumsy. It was the worst watch I ever had. For
the first time since I was 13, I quit wearing a watch.

I tried a Casio W96H. Normally, the month and day require four digits.
They’d increased it to eight digits by adding the year. The eight digits
were tiny and squeezed together. Who needs to check a watch to know what
year it is? For some reason, I couldn’t get the start/stop button for
the stopwatch to work reliably. Each failure ruined an attempt to time
something.

I tried the slightly older Casio W201-AV. It was much better except that
the buttons were flush with the sides. From the face, they were
invisible, and one had to grope to feel them. To time something, i
couldn’t get my finger on the button instantly. Pushing below the level
of the case, I didn’t always depress it far enough to start or stop. Who
designs these watches!

I figured if it didn’t work right, I might as well throw it away.
First, I took a chance and put a dab of J B Weld on the button. As I’d
feared, it flowed down around the button. However, after I let it set up
two hours, I was able to dig out the excess epoxy like modeling clay.
Now the watch functions very well. If I want to time something, I can
feel the button instantly, and I always push it far enough.

Out of curiosity, I bought a Casio F91W-1. F91W’s have been selling well
for 27 years and I see why. The display is unfashionably small, but good
contrast and well-shaped digits show a that small display can be easy to
read. The crystal would be easier to scratch than a modern one, but a
smaller crystal is less likely to be scratched. It's about $10 at Amazon.
