Finally got around to giving the various suggestions a try.  I suppose I 
should have mentioned that Command I says aiff-c audio.  Unfortunately, 
none of the suggested programs worked.  Some others I tried from google 
searches and from those of one hit (

) also wouldn't work.  I could have sworn I saw a post in some mac 
usenet group (from nospam, I think) that said that Quicktime 7 could be 
used to find out what compression type was being used which might be 
useful to know.  I downloaded qt 7 but didn't see a way to get the info 
on the files.  I've looked at the Wikipedia aiff aiff-c compression type 
section ( 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Interchange_File_Format#AIFF-C_common_compression_types 
) so I'd probably recognize the compression type if I saw it.

I'm beginning to think that Erik Richard's caveat about the audio in a 
container might be the basis for proceeding and I'm wondering if there's 
some freeware that I might substitute for Toast Titanium.

I suppose I should buy the cd in regular format but I'm beginning to 
develop an Ahab like obsession about format conversion.

Currently trying out things on a 10.6.8 mac running iTunes 11.2.2 but 
could move it to a mavericks system.
