the changes it makes to media files are to id3 tags and are separate
from what is kept in the library file, which are things like play
counts, ratings, etc.

putting music and video on a server and keeping the library file on the
local hard drive works just fine.

there is no risk and it's fully supported. 

where the risk comes in is if you put the library file on the server
and more than one person accesses it, but if it's just one person with
multiple computers, it may not be an issue. for a family, it will be an
issue.
