Mail.app is "Loading"

After moving to Lion I attempted to open a recent email and in the 
lower half of the screen, in the display panel, it simply says 
"Loading" and has the whirligig going 'round and 'round forever.  Never 
a display of the content.  Okay, I assumed, there's something wiggy 
with that message. Maybe an odd attachment or something; but frankly it 
wasn't so important.

Yesterday I wanted to send an email to an old correspondent and I 
called up all the messages from him, some 30 or so over three years. 
Every single one of them does this "Loading" business and none will 
display. If I double-click one for display it does the same thing.

I went to spotlight, typed in his email address; it pulls up all the 
individual posts and I can hover over each to see the content (a 
feature in Lion).  The content displays fine this-a-way.  If I then 
double-click it loads it via Mail.app and displays.

One of the emails has a title "More Mics".  If I search for that text 
it will not find it.  If I search for the user's name "Mark Long" it 
will find no email.  But when I type in "Mark Long" I note in the 
wearch field that there is an indicator of "People" one of which is 
"Long Mark".  I select that indicator and it pulls up all the "Mark 
Long" email including one titled "More Mics".  But when double clicked, 
it still won't display.

What the hell is up with this?  Anyone experienced this?  Any ideas of 
what can be done to remedy?
