Base Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold MSRPs for 256GB
are both about $100 less than the Duo, so the Apple Duo is likely
overpriced (IMHO) given it's a new model which has no proven track record.

The fact Apple cut orders by 15% indicates Apple would likely agree.

Nonetheless, Apple owners love to brag about how much money they waste.
This newsgroup alone is filled with people bragging how much they do that.

So I'm sure Apple is doing just fine with those who are purchasing it.

To add value to this conversation, here's a comparison of folding phones.
*How the iPhone Duo compares to other folding phones*
 <https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/988542/iphone-duo-foldable-samsung-google-spec-comparison>

The Duo is the heaviest of all three folding flagships.
The Duo (and Samsung) screens are smaller than the Pixel's.
The Duo has fewer cameras compared to Google's flagship.
The Duo supports 4K recording at up to 120fps which others don't have.
All do wireless charging, although the Samsung is 5W lower than the others
All these phones have batteries SMALLER than my 2021 free Galaxy A32-5G!

Since Apple historically puts the worst batteries they can get away with
into all their iPhones, we'll have to see what kind of rating they get.

As for AppleCare, the last time we calculated the costs, you end up paying
for the phone twice, which is simply absurd in terms of economic sense.

What a deal AppleCare is.
 a. Apple gets paid for the phone once, when you buy it
 b. And Apple gets paid for the phone again and again, while you own it.

What a deal!

So a 5% price difference is "overpriced" to you?

Where is the "fact" memorialized, Arlen?

Nope. Complete and utter bullshit.

Interesting that Samsung is deeply discounting their Galaxy Z Fold 8...

I'm looking forward to being reminded that Samsung definitely, for sure,
absolutely provides seven years worth of updates and that Apple's
batteries aren't as good as the ones Galaxy users had in the devices
they threw away after two years.

Yeah, about that:

"
Apple iPhone Duo Orders Slip Into 2027 Amid Preorder Frenzy

Shipping estimates for Apple Inc.’s first folding phone, the iPhone Duo,
slipped into December and beyond within minutes of the company opening
preorders on Friday.
The extended timelines suggest that strong demand and sharply
constrained supply will make the $1,999 device challenging to purchase
on its Oct. 23 release date or in the near future.
The latest shipping estimates shown on Apple’s online store applied to
both colors of the iPhone Duo, and in all storage configurations,
ranging from 256 gigabytes to 2 terabytes.
Preorder customers reported delayed delivery dates even after taking
Apple’s recommended steps of reserving their preferred color and storage
size ahead of time in an attempt to speed up the buying process.
Apple retail stores also ran out of launch-day stock of the iPhone Duo,
the company’s first-ever foldable device, almost instantly after
preorders began at 8 a.m. in New York.
Shares of Apple rose 1.8% before markets opened in New York.
Compared with the debut of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September,
which went smoothly for customers who placed a timely order, securing an
iPhone Duo was significantly more difficult. Apple is set to sell about
6 million units of the iPhone Duo this year, Counterpoint Research said
last month.
Apple typically reserves some units for walk-in customers on release
day, which could revive the long lines outside Apple and mobile carrier
stores that were once an annual tradition for iPhone launches.

According Mark Gurman, Apple decided to release the iPhone Duo now,
rather than wait to have more stock on hand (likely partly to stop the
continuing rumour mill 'announcements') ...

Mark Gurman: Apple Made 'Major Mistake' With iPhone Duo Pre-Orders
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite knowing that the iPhone Duo would face "severe supply
constraints" due to manufacturing challenges, Apple chose to begin
iPhone Duo pre-orders on Friday instead of waiting until it had
more inventory ready, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his
Power On newsletter today, he called this decision a "major
    mistake."

"Let me cut to the chase: Apple made a major mistake here," he said.
"The company knew there would be severe supply constraints but went
ahead with the launch anyway, apparently prioritizing a desire to
get the device on the market early in its fiscal first quarter over
satisfying demand. That will disappoint many of the early adopters
    most eager to buy it."

Apple originally planned to launch the iPhone Duo in the U.S. and
China only before expanding the device to other countries later,
according to Gurman, but the company ultimately decided to start
pre-orders in more than 70 countries simultaneously.

Less than 30 minutes after pre-orders began, Apple's estimated
shipping dates for the iPhone Duo slipped to around January 25 in
most countries. Apple typically underpromises and overdelivers with
its delivery dates, though, so hopefully some customers will end up
having their shipping estimates bumped up at least slightly.

"Apple still has a long way to go to catch up with its Android
rivals, both in battery capacity and charging cycles."

One new datum came out today, where, yet again, Apple proves to put the
crappiest batteries they can get away with into this new iPhone Duo.
 <https://www.androidauthority.com/iphone-duo-battery-specs-charging-cycles-3724810/>

Even my free ($289 MSRP) 2021 Galaxy A32-5G has a better battery than that!

No wonder no Apple iPhone got even close to an A rating when the first EU
benchmarks came out, where Apple whined for 44 pages making excuses why
nobody but the super-secret hidden underground Cupertino lab could eke out
performance out of any iPhone ever sold up until that EU benchmark result.

While we reported for years on the Apple newsgroups that Apple puts the
crappiest batteries they can get away with, on purpose in an iPhone, the
reason they use crappy batteries is to make the iPhone die sooner on us.

Even the Galaxy Z Fold 8's smaller battery gets 20% more charge cycles
(i.e., at least a year longer use than any iPhone ever sold on earth).

Mainly because of the crappy battery Apple chose to put in the iPhone Duo,
the charge cycles are drastically less than any similar Android fold.

On a good note, even though Apple has always put crappy batteries in the
iPhone, the EU benchmarks forced Apple to at least barely meet minimum
specs, such that, the aforementioned article says, as the last line...

"Apple still has a long way to go to catch up with its Android
rivals, both in battery capacity and charging cycles."

It's a notable omission in the reporting that they chose not to mention the
reduced the battery life of the Z Fold 8 over the Duo. Using the exact same
EU data. I guess it is not compatible with promoting "Android Authority"
lol.

Samsung (49h10):
https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/p6/common/energylabel/uk-energylabel-sm-f971bzkceub-energylabel.pdf

Apple (51h30):
https://eprel.ec.europa.eu/screen/product/smartphonestablets20231669/2774825

According to the EU data the iphone Duo has the best overall endurance and
battery efficiency compared to the Samsung and Google Pixel alternatives.

We've also discussed the charge cycle ratings at length: Samsung simply
makes them up. Last year all their phones were rated as 1700+. This year
they're all 1200. Next year: 700?

Given it's a manufacturer supplied detail and unverified it means nothing.

What we need is a crowd-sourced dataset of 3-4 yo mobile phones and get
their cycle count and battery health data.

You are getting more like Alan Baker by the minute in that he (and now you)
can't figure out we're talking *years* of battery life, not daily hours.

What matters in terms of why Apple puts the crappiest batteries they can
into their iPhones is that Apple plans on the phone dying sooner on you.

That's the whole point.
The capacity and charge cycles to 80% are what matter, not daily hours.

And yes, daily hours are a second-order effect but total lifetime is what
I'm always talking about, where Apple's iPhone batteries simply die sooner.

And that's by design.
Which is my point.

I just asked Claude:

"
Do apple batteries die sooner?
Searched the web

Short answer: not really — not systematically. There's no good evidence
that Apple batteries inherently die faster than Android ones at the
cell-chemistry level. The differences people notice come from somewhere
else. A few caveats on my sources first: several of these are
SEO/content-mill sites (not primary sources), and they disagree with
each other on specific numbers, so treat exact figures loosely and look
at the pattern across them rather than any single stat.

What the data actually shows:

Apple states that iPhone 15 series batteries are designed to retain
80 percent capacity after 1,000 charge cycles — that's actually a higher
rated cycle life than what many sources cite for older iPhones (Apple
officially rates iPhones 12–15 at 500 cycles to 80% capacity), and
Apple's 2026 official cycle-life guidance remains 1,000 full cycles for
iPhone 15 and newer, 500 for 14 and earlier. So Apple itself has been
raising its rated cycle life on newer models, not falling behind.
iPhone lifespan analysis: Software support, battery health and iOS
26 performance +2
On the Android side, premium Android devices generally perform
similarly to iPhones in battery longevity (2–3 years before significant
degradation), while mid-range Android shows noticeable decline at 18–24
months and budget Android at 12–18 months.

So the real divide isn't "Apple vs. Android" — it's premium vs.
budget, on both platforms. A flagship Samsung or Pixel and a flagship
iPhone are roughly in the same ballpark; it's cheap Android phones with
lower-grade cells and simpler battery management systems that fall off
faster.

Where Apple does have a real, documented edge:

Transparency tooling. iPhones expose a built-in "Maximum Capacity"
health metric and cycle-aware performance management in Settings;
Android's native battery usage stats show app-level drain but don't
track actual cell degradation, requiring third-party apps like
AccuBattery to estimate it. This doesn't mean Apple batteries last
longer — it means it's easier to see an iPhone's battery aging than a
typical Android's.

Software longevity, not battery chemistry, is often what actually
drives the "iPhones feel like they last longer" perception: Apple's
robust hardware and industry-leading software update cycle provide a
functional lifespan of four to seven years, with battery degradation
being the primary bottleneck rather than the phone becoming obsolete.
Many Android phones get shorter official OS-update windows (though this
varies a lot by manufacturer and tier), so the device feels "outdated"
independent of the battery.

What actually drives degradation more than brand, per these sources:

Heat exposure during charging causes more degradation than cycle
count alone — this is platform-agnostic.

Frequently fast-charging to 100% or letting a device sit at 100%
for extended periods pushes effective cycle-equivalent stress higher
than the nominal cycle count, again regardless of OS.

A one-year-old battery with 150 cycles will almost always
outperform a five-year-old battery with the same 150 cycles, because the
chemistry degrades slowly over time regardless of use — calendar aging
happens on both platforms too.

Bottom line: the "Apple batteries die sooner" impression, if you've
heard it, isn't well supported by current rated cycle-life specs or
degradation data — Apple's newer-model ratings are actually
competitive-to-better than many Android counterparts in the same price
tier. What is true is that Apple's battery health reporting is more
visible and standardized, which paradoxically can make iPhone battery
decline feel more noticeable/discussed, simply because people can
actually see the number dropping.

If any numbers are wrong, I ask the team to point them out please.

The Samsung lasts 1-1/2 years *longer* than the "efficient" iPhone
(proving, yet again, that this bogus "efficiency" proffers no value).

The discussion regarding the EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU 2023/1670)
provides the first standardized 'Kill Time' metric we have ever had.

Note: Kill-time is a term chosen to make the point, much like an LD50
is for drug companies, that it's a calculated value to a detrimental state.

I'll ignore the insults and focus on the facts because it's important
to parse the (admittedly brilliant) marketing propaganda surrounding this
bogus amorphous "efficiency" that has never once resulted in actual value.

To that end of forcing the OEM's hand at actually defining that
(admittedly brilliant but bogus) "efficiency" claim, we have to all
thank God for the UK & for the EU forcing OEMs to common benchmarks!

Even I'm learning more about it every day, where I belatedly realized I
had misquoted the numbers from the EPREL/EU certified test profile, which
is a rigid, simulated "day" that every phone must run to get its label.

It turns out that it's much worse than I had previously calculated in
that the Galaxy S26 Ultra delivers ~24.5% more total standardized battery
life to 80% capacity than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That's roughly 542 extra days, or about 1.5 years of calculated use.
So much for that bogus amorphous (yet admittedly brilliant) "efficiency".	.

Among other things, under these UK/EU European rules, manufacturers must
declare the cycles a battery withstands before dropping to 80% health.

They could have picked any percentage.
They picked 80%.
So that's what we will use.

1. The specifications (EU certified)
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
      a. Capacity: 4800 mAh
      b. EU Endurance (Single Charge): 53 hours
      c. EU Cycle Rating (to 80%): 1,000 cycles
      d. Daily Cycles (24h/53h): 0.45283 cycles/day

   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
      a. Capacity: 4855 mAh
      b. EU Endurance (Single Charge): 55 hours
      c. EU Cycle Rating (to 80%): 1,200 cycles
      d. Daily Cycles (24h/55h): 0.43636 cycles/day

2. 'Kill Time' = Total Life Cycles / Daily Cycles
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max:
      1,000 / ~0.453 = 2,208.33 days (approx 6.05 years)
   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra:
      1,200 / ~0.436 = 2,750 days (approx 7.53 years)

3. Analysis of the data
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
Total Life: 2,208 days (approx 6.05 years)
Efficiency Calculation: 53 hours 4.8 Ah = 11.04 hours per Ah
      Efficiency: 11.04 hours per Ah

   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
Total Life: 2,750 days (approx 7.53 years)
Efficiency Calculation: 55 hours 4.855 Ah = 11.33 hours per Ah
      Efficiency: 11.33 hours per Ah
Margin: 542 Days (approx 1.49 years)
      Lifespan Advantage: +24.5%

4. Summary of the facts:
   a. Efficiency:
Samsung wins. It gets 55 hours out of 4.855Ah,
while Apple gets 53 hours out of 4.8Ah.
   b. Capacity:
Samsung wins, though Apple has finally started closing the
historic battery-capacity gap (but only recently).
   c. Durability:
Samsung wins. The 1,200 cycle rating on Samsung's 2026 chemistry
provides the Kill-Time victory despite the claimed iPhone efficiency.

Why don't you Apple religious zealots respond to the facts, with facts?

Use this template to compare the iPhone folding flagship.
To the Samsung folding flagship.

Then, let's see how funny the results are.

Here is the template for the comparison you will be making for the team.
1. The specifications (EU certified)
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
      a. Capacity: 4800 mAh
      b. EU Endurance (Single Charge): 53 hours
      c. EU Cycle Rating (to 80%): 1,000 cycles
      d. Daily Cycles (24h/53h): 0.45283 cycles/day

   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
      a. Capacity: 4855 mAh
      b. EU Endurance (Single Charge): 55 hours
      c. EU Cycle Rating (to 80%): 1,200 cycles
      d. Daily Cycles (24h/55h): 0.43636 cycles/day

2. 'Kill Time' = Total Life Cycles / Daily Cycles
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max:
      1,000 / ~0.453 = 2,208.33 days (approx 6.05 years)
   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra:
      1,200 / ~0.436 = 2,750 days (approx 7.53 years)

3. Analysis of the data
   A. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
Total Life: 2,208 days (approx 6.05 years)
      Efficiency Calculation: 53 hours / 4.8 Ah = 11.04 hours per Ah
      Efficiency: 11.04 hours per Ah

   B. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
Total Life: 2,750 days (approx 7.53 years)
      Efficiency Calculation: 55 hours / 4.855 Ah = 11.33 hours per Ah
      Efficiency: 11.33 hours per Ah
Margin: 542 Days (approx 1.49 years)
      Lifespan Advantage: +24.5%

4. Summary of the facts:
   a. Efficiency:
Samsung wins. It gets 55 hours out of 4.855Ah,
while Apple gets 53 hours out of 4.8Ah.
   b. Capacity:
Samsung wins, though Apple has finally started closing the
historic battery-capacity gap (but only recently).
   c. Durability:
Samsung wins. The 1,200 cycle rating on Samsung's 2026 chemistry
provides the Kill-Time victory despite the claimed iPhone efficiency.

SUMMARY:
iPhone 17 Pro Max hrs of runtime per charge cycle = 18.87 hours
Samsung S26 Ultra hrs of runtime per charge cycle = 21.82 hours
     *Winner = Samsung (+15.6%)*

iPhone 17 Pro Max endurance per charge = 53 hours
Samsung S26 Ultra endurance per charge = 55 hours
     *Winner = Samsung (+3.8%)*

  iPhone 17 Pro Max efficiency (hrs/Ah) = 11.04
  Samsung S26 Ultra efficiency (hrs/Ah) = 11.33
     *Winner = Samsung (+2.6%)*

iPhone 17 Pro Max calendar life (calculated) = ~6.05 years
Samsung S26 Ultra calendar life (calculated) = ~7.53 years
