#2234 — HP laptop outputs short buzzing noises while other Audio is playing

HP laptop (Probook 4730 approx 2 1/2 years old)
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
Has just started outputing short buzzing noises randomly while other
audio is playing.  Sometimes it also thinks a key is pressed on the
keyboard when it is not.  I am not sure if these events always happen
at the same time yet.  HDD is suspect and a replacement is on order.

What the most likely cause?

Strange that it would start doing that out of the blue, normally more
of a design fault problem (like in my Thinkpad R31 which makes all sorts
of sounds with the volume turned up).

Perhaps a driver problem. Have you got a Linux Live CD you could try?

Right now we're focusing on replacing the HDD.  The old one won't
clone due to read errors and a first attempt at using the recovery
DVD-ROM didn't do anything[1].

[1] It displays some messages and tells you to hit Return to continue.
Doing this displays a message (in German) and then it goes back to the
first screen telling you to hit Return.  Rinse and repeat.

FWIW: We have installed a brand new HDD and with a clean OS install.
The sound problem still occurs, albeit less frequently - weird.

No.  But it doesn't sound like a short and the problem also occurs
with the headphones.
