Subjectexternal USB keyboard requires reboot after laptop wakes from suspend or hibernate - please help

Host OS: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
System: ASUS N61JQ (laptop)
Monitor: ViewSonic P815 (via VGA port)

My external USB keyboard stopped working after
the laptop wakes from hibernate mode (due to a power outage).
The last time this happened, the external USB keyboard worked again after a
reboot.
Is there a way to get the external USB keyboard to work when
laptop wakes from hibernate without a reboot?

Well, I unplugged the external USB keyboard from the USB 3.0 port and
plugged it into a USB 2.0 port instead and the keyboard works without a
reboot.
I don't understand it.

Yes, it was the closest USB port and I'm running out of USB ports.
I need to get a USB hub.

Host OS is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. NumLock light does not come on when
keyboard is plugged into USB 3.0 port but comes on when plugged into USB 2.0
port.
The problem may have something to do with the USB 3.0 of this particular
laptop (Asus N61Jq).
Not many laptops had USB 3.0 when this laptop came out. Not sure though.

I like the humor. :-)

Can't be too choosy when there are only 3 USB ports (one is
permanently used for the mouse since I can't stand the touchpad,
the USB 3.0 one has been useless so far, which leaves only one left for
the keyboard/scanner/other unless I get a USB hub)

Too bad they are /so/ expensive.

You could get a "multi-card reader" for the 3.5 inch floppy bay. They
usually have a USB port as well. Most actually operate under the USB.

A lot of keyboards are also USB hubs.

For my situation, I need a USB hub with power adapter.

Logitech used to make one that was a USB hub and a dessert topping.
It didn't sell well because most people wanted their keyboard to be a USB hub
and a floor wax.

I have a keyboard that has a display on it, and audio controls and a
macro recorder and a USB hub.

It STILL sells for full retail or more everywhere you find it, and so
does their newer deluxe virgin... err version. :-)

They should come out with a touch screen version that has an old cell
phone screen on it so they can keep costs down.

To me it sounds like a driver and/oder usb-powersaving issue with your
USB chipset.

Do you use tools like TLP or powertop to reduce your system's power
consumption?

Thanks, I haven't done much with power management tools yet.
But, it sounds like I probably should look into it at some point when
I have more time. For now, I'll just take the easy way out (and avoid USB
3.0).

Boot up a Knoppix Live DVD and see if it behaves the same way.

Then try another distro too. This way, you can narrow down whether this
is an Ubu problem, or your hardware.
