Does anyone know where to find a copy of a hardware maintenance disk for
Thinkpad T60? I need to correct the model number in BIOS to solve System
Update "Error 75".

Well, not "disk" but most Thinkpad hardware maintenance manuals are
on-line. You might try looking here:

Well, probably not, but my manual (for the T42) does give the URL
where the maintenance diskette and service diskette are posted.... I
was hoping that the manual for your T60 might do the same. But then, I
don't even know if that would be the right disk for what your are
doing.... sorry I wasted your time.

I'm very happy to try a T42 disk and test whether they are interchangeable. 

Does that URL in your manual really work and lead to something useful?

You know, I've never tried it.... never had a reason to.

So, I just tried it and no, I get a message that the page isn't
redirecting properly. But it implies that at one time there was a link
to download the disk.

	The original poster probably didn't have the time to visit
www.lenovo.com, where the complete BIOS support including bootable 
media, the Thinkvantage software maintenance images, recovery media
and utilities, and software management tools are easily located and
downloaded.  For every thinkpad ever sold back to the 700 series.

	Lenovo nee' IBM support is second to none, but it's more fun to
post questions to Usenet then play yes but with the responses.

	Anyway, someone concerned with exact byte values in BIOS should
be capable of editing the file and reflashing the chip all by himself, hmmm?

exact drivers for your hardware configuration.  If you don't want to navigate
there's an option to download an agent and have it take you directly to the 
correct page.

	The page is dynamic so a posted link won't work properly (your
previous choices are recorded and used to construct the proper page) but
it's easy to navigate there.  BTW a posted link isn't broken but lacking
the cookies will take you to the default page.

	The maintenance discs are under software update and/or system 
management.  The full recovery discs aren't downloadable (the driver and
utility recovery discs are) but the part numbers are listed in the hardware
manual.  That's under (surprise) the Manuals section.  To get one you call
Lenovo and use a credit card to place an order.

	Now, if you want a vendor that's a real PIA to get drivers from
try finding stuff for old Toughbooks.  "It was hard to build so it should
be hard to maintain!"

Thanks but I am not looking for a BIOS update or the tools to perform that, I
am looking for a particular utility called Hardware Maintenance Diskette that
is mentioned in all the Hardware Maintenance Manuals but at broken URLs. I
believe that utility will allow one to make corrections to the model number
stored in BIOS. Did you see something with that name? Normally a regular BIOS
update offers the user an invitation to change the model number, but I tried
that and apparently it does not work - perhaps because the existing values
are invalid.

	Is the eprom information invalid or just different then you want?
IOW did you swap motherboards and get RFID errors, or do you have software
that won't run?

	If you swapped boards why not just flash the correct bios and reinstall
wnidows?  AFAIK the only reason to care about all this is to migrate a serial
number to a new motherboard, and I'm not sure why that mnatters to you.

I won't waste bytes explaining the history and I have no idea whether the
system board was ever changed by anyone. The model number setting is not a
different machine type but nonsense similar in format to the one discussed
here: http://tinyurl.com/3fb6kd9. Maybe that is what comes from the factory
on a replacement system board before installation. The only known problem it
had caused so far is that System Update won't work and just errors because it
is unable to send a recognizable machine model number to Lenovo's server.

Someone finally did send me a link to exactly what I needed and that file is
on http://download.lenovo.com/... but AFAICT it is now an orphan page with no
links to it. I mailed a message to ask the person who sent me the URL how he
learnt or discovered it.

Lenovo are currently in the process of crippling the old IBM support system 
so that it only works on the system that you are using to browse the support 
pages. Pretty tough when/if, like me, you have 10+ ThinkPads but do your 
downloading from just the one. :-(

Damn Lenovo, they're destroying what was a large part of the attraction of 
ThinkPads; The support.

100% Shaun, it's now not much more that mass of broken links. And I can meet
your 10 and raise you another 10. Started on the TP600 and not yet gone past
X60s and T61 because of my familiarity with XP and owning some veteran
hardware that will never have Windows 7 support.

Yep, I stopped at the T60 (three thereof) as I have a big fondness for 
FlexViews and I also seriously dislike the short screens that most T61s and 
later have. Most of my current stable of working TPs are Pentium M / Core / 
Core2 (which are all USB2 / DDR or DDR2 RAM as well) although I do have a 
couple earlier machines, an X24 and an X30 (both PIII 1.13GHz, a fine CPU).

I do have W7 Ultimate on one of my 'ultimate' T60s (C2D 64-bit, FlexView) 
but I stopped using it after a few weeks, now I only fire it up to keep the 
moisture out and update the OS. I must buy another HDD and put XP back on 
it. At least it'll get some use then.

	Some of the support for really old stuff is gone, though.  You used
to be able to get drivers for a 365 if you needed them, not now sigh.

	Lenovo may not do as good a job as IBM, but there's a whole lot
