#257 — HP laptop dv6000 OS

The hard drive died and I have no replacement OS. How
do I get a replacement XP home to put on this machine
that has oddball stuff on it?

At this stage I'd settle for a functioning linux that
can address the built-ins.

It came with an OS loaded on it and no repair disks.

I first tried ubuntu and I rather like the linux OS which has come a
long ways since I used any form of unix as my primary machine. And
I used to enjoy the challenges presented, but now that I'm in my 70's
I no longer have the patience. I'll probably load ubuntu on a spare
machine for playtime now that I've downloaded it and have been
playing on the internet using it. This is from a guy who successfully
ran both Microport Unix as well as a 3b2 providing early free usenet
access over phone lines. That dedication and patience is now long
gone.

Here it comes:

*HOWEVER*

Loading preferred software from third party sources, such as Open
Office, is not only far from being seamless, it would require much
more time and investigation than I am willing to devote. In our
elder years the days get shorter and we can't achieve very much
that we used to.

The secondary problem that I noticed is that although ubuntu
discovered and logged the HP-5370DW printer hanging on my LAN
and "installed it" a couple of hours of fiddling with the
connection didn't allow the computer to talk to it. Plugging
another printer directly into a USB port came up, was installed,
and functioning in short order.

I can see that linux, as a whole, has come a long ways, it still
has a long ways to go before it can actually compete with MS for
the "ready to use" market that I've fallen into.

I've ordered the appropriate restore disk from the vendor you've
mentioned. The eBay seller's product probably won't work. Thank
you for all your help.

Hi Bill! I can't disagree with anything you said about Linux. I use it 
for small tasks like email, web browsing, and newsgroups. But it doesn't 
impress me for other tasks.

And let us know how that restore disc works out.

I'm impressed so far. They sent me an email asking for further
detail from the labels on the bottom of the machine because
they recognize the variations that are possible within
the basic model number.

Yep, I'll let you know how the recovery disk works out when it
arrives.

	Lol.  I use it for large tasks, like running web farms to power 
fortune 500 size ecommerce sites. It does suck for playing games, though.

	Makes a good IPS too.

	Hmmmm, ya know, Bill, I interviewed at AOL in the 90's and I'm certain
they used Suns for the heavy lifting.  Might have been HP...  Wasn't Windows.

Hey, wharfie! You sure it wasn't specially configured solaris? With
some aspects of Red Hat and other publishers having gone heavily
commercial you can buy configured linux if you want to spend the
bux, markedly more than MicroSqueeze charges, but then the results,
for specific tasks, are better too.

Wouldn't you think that with several decades of personal computers
behind us we could have more than one source for a fitzall OS? Linux
is trying but still requires a lot of tweaking. I'll say that they've
made tremendous progress for a heavily volunteer initiative.

Anyone with programming skills and patience can just about make any
OS do whatever they want, so long as there's open source. The more
I age the more I'm becoming like a "user." <ugh!!!!!!!> I'm facing
facts, the older I get the less I'm interested in tweaking computers
and the more I'm interested in other projects. And as part of the
aging process along comes the need to be more physical. Use it
or lose it!

OTOH I wonder how much more use I can squeeze out of this dv6000
laptop. The OS and computer are 5+ years old. With a new hard drive
I'll probably hit a wall again in just a few years. Considering the
purchase price was about $800 (Sam's Club) that's $160 a year not
counting the replacement battery a couple of years back. (And then,
after I've bought the new battery and disposed of the original, HP
does a recall on the batteries.)

Has anybody done an analysis of the real cost of a laptop over
its usual life cycle?

  HP actually did a recall on the entire laptop as part of the 
settlement deal with Nvidia.  If your laptop qualified, you could have 
gotten a Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX as a replacement (although its a 
downgraded IMHO).  They also extended the recall on the batteries... 
Which of course I have replaced mine twice since I bought it 4+ years ago.

  As I said in my other post, installing Windows 7 on it has breathed 
new life into mine.  Its faster and the battery lasts longer.

Hi Ryan! Yes I think that is sad. What good is a lawsuit if you give you 
a replacement that is a downgrade? Although I guess some people will 
take it as no laptop vs. something is better than nothing I guess. :-(

I see Windows 7 on multiple core processors as appearing as faster. 
Although I am really disappointed with Windows 7 on single core 
processors. Luckily I don't use single core processors too much anymore.

	3B2 ran a standard commercial ATT SYS V.  Matched to the hardware.  
We got more calls about people whose new machine wouldn't boot because 
they forgot to switch the shipping latch on the disc drive to "run" than about
anything else.

	But don't get nme started on 3B20's.

The restore disks from this placed arrived today. 3 CD's. It took
almost 7 hours to load everything but the look and feel is just as
it was when I bought the machine new. The long load time was
mostly the machine sitting there quietly and doing stuff without
intervention. It announced the time it would take and kept ticking
down the seconds as it went.

I'll have to overcome the built-in Microsoft Office suite that
Microsoft installs with the hope that the machine owner will buy
it. Other than that minor nuisance I'm happy to get my laptop
back as it was.

I have reloaded an HP that had 6 CD's and it didn't take 1 hr. You
just might want to run a diagnostic on that new drive.

Oh good deal Bill, glad it all worked out. 7 hours? Sounds like it 
reinstalled Windows through DOS. As that is about how long it takes 
using SmartDrive. Without SmartDrive, it is like 24 hours.

I ran the built in diagnostic provided by HP and it gave "good"
results. Also ubuntu loaded in a reasonable time period of well
under an hour.

And yes, I killed off the office suite as well as that nasty
norton that came built-in on a 60 day trial.

I think I forgot all of the reasons why you would ever want to install 
Windows NT under DOS. But one of them was I believe if your BIOS can't 
see your optical drive was one of them. And one of the tricks was to use 
DOS with a CD/DVD driver and then you can install Windows from a CD. But 
those BIOS are really old nowadays.

Hi Bill! I got curious about 7 hours to install. So I ordered a recovery 
disc for this laptop just to check it out. And I got three CDs as well. 
And I threw in one of my spare hard drives and went to install. And here 
it only had taken about 35 minutes to install (which is about normal for 
XP). And I didn't need to use the key code to install, did you? Although 
I do have 30 days to activate.

Now I am thinking for yours to take 7 hours, well your CD/DVD drive can 
be flaky and it could take that long. So that is just one suggestion on 
what it could be.

This Gateway restore discs from restoredisks didn't forced me to install 
all of the extra software on the machine. As I could pick from a list 
which ones I wanted to install.

One thing that was sort of disappointing for me with this restore disc 
is that they didn't slipstream the SATA driver into the CD. And without 
the driver, you need the drivers on a floppy disc and use the F6 option 
during the install. Pain in the butt for most people I would assume. 
Since most doesn't have floppy drives or floppy disks either for that 
matter.

Some  years ago I ordered an HP laptop (XP) restore disk from HP. They
needed the serial number. When the disks arrived they installed fine,
no key code, no activation. I'm guessing that something was checked in
the hardware that allowed installation on *only* that laptop?

The restore disk that came with my EeePC 1000HW also requires no key
code, no activation, perhaps same reason.

However my latest EeePC 1015PE (W7) came with no restore disk, They
make you make your own on a DVD. And like my old EeePC 2G Surf there
is a hidden recovery partition for a factory reset.
