I don't know Ken? That wasn't what I was expecting. As if it was the
video chip, I would think it would screw up right away as soon as you
turned it back on after running it after more than 15 minutes. As
everything in the top lid (LCD and all) should start out ice cold when
you first turn the internal LCD on (regardless how long the laptop has
been running). Now I am not sure what to think.

Did Geek Squad actually charge the previous owner for the LCD that
didn't work? I would think if they were honest (and I heard stories of
otherwise) that they shouldn't have by putting in parts that didn't fix
anything and charging for them. If they only charged for labor only,
well that could mean a lot of things, both either good or bad. But they
really shouldn't even charge for this either.

Makes sense as one explanation. I've been a Dead fan since the late

Ken can check this too. As start out with the external monitor and leave
the internal one off. And sometime after 15 minutes (many hours later if
you would like), switch to the internal display. And if it is messed up
from the start, it shouldn't have anything to do with the LCD. As the
LCD should be ice cold anyway from the start.

Also understand, the way I understand Ken's problem was that Geek Squad
replaced the LCD panel to correct this same problem and it did nothing.
If this is correct, it would be totally weird that a third replacement
would actually fix anything.

And if it takes about 15 minutes to mess up... well I don't think that
proves anything. As I am not sure what the video chip is doing before
this anyway. As it might run a bit cooler without the internal display
running. As it would be hard to guess at without any further
investigation.

Hey guys;
Wow, this is civil!! I'm lovin' it.
I have used the laptop on external monitor for hours and switched it
over and the internal lcd worked for 15 minutes or so then started the
flicker thing again.
I don't have any knowledge of the twin head video chip thing, but it
makes sense to me; once the internal side starts being used, it warms
up and whatever defect is in there starts to manifest itself. The
other side doesn't have this defect, so it works as it is supposed to.
I've tried everything else, so I assume it needs a motherboard
replacement; then we could determine once and for all if it is a GPU,
LCD or video cable problem.
Anyone have a cheap Toshiba motherboard for sale?
Thanks again for all the feedback.
Wharfie (?) we all welcome you too. I'd love to know the origins of
that nickname :)

Why do you say that Lou? Doesn't most laptops support two independent
displays? Say like have the main desktop on one display while watching a
movie on the other screen. And wouldn't that require a dualhead video
chip to pull that off? Which is like having two video chips in one like
dual core CPU processors, right?

Plus Ken's problem only pops up after about 15 minutes after warming up
and only on the internal display. And there isn't any heat to speak of
in the LCD panel to cause a thermal problem except for the florescent
lamp. Which shouldn't be close enough to anything to cause a thermal
problem somewhere else anyway.

I personally believe the cheap way to determine what has failed is with
a can of freeze. And the first thing I would spray is the video chip.
And if the problem corrects, then that is definitely what it is. Ken did
mention before that he didn't want to disassemble the laptop to get to
the video chip to spray it. But you can get a can of freeze with a hose
that shouldn't have a problem of getting in there at all. And I believe
the video chip is on the bottom of the PCB. And surely there should be
one trap door that could be opened to get it in there.

Wharfie;
I am looking for a motherboard for a Thinkpad X61, not the tablet. I
don't have the specifics here at home, but I can give you the exact
number tomorrow. I've been looking for 6 months. Maybe we can do some
business. I'll give you details tomorrow. If you want to take this off-
forum, just let me know. The original got slightly wet in the floods
we had here in May and was doa afterward.
Thanks!
