I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that needs a complete reinstall of the original
factory OS and drivers. I called Dell today and they're shipping the discs
(I think they said one for OS and another for drivers... not sure about this
though), but I have a question: Will I need to pay to have Windows 7
reactivated or will the factory install already have it activated?

Thanks,
Bob

More likely than not it will be a Volume License version which is
locked to the V2.1 SLIC in the Dell BIOS, and will be self-activated upon
installation on a compatible Dell machine.

AFAIK any official Dell OS CD will install on any Dell computer
modulo a few high end offerings.

They install on non-Dells, too, you just have to use the COA on
the bottom :-)

Hi Bob,

The factory installed operating system checks for the Service Tag and
gets activated on the computer. You will not have to pay for Windows 7
re-activation. The Driver disk includes the compatible drivers for the
hardware on the Inspiron 1545. These drivers need to be installed after
re-installing Windows.

Please reply to this message if you need further information.

For OEM activation of computers certified for Windows 7, it doesn't check
for the service tag. It looks for the ACPI_SLIC 2.1 table in the BIOS,
and compares the BIOS entry with the corresponding data in the
pre-installed Dell OEM certificate.
