The brand of drive won't matter to Linux. The controller might but almost certainly won't. As far as consumer grade laptop drives go I like Western Digital or Fujitsu. But there's not that much difference. Samsung drives are Ok and cheap. Look into a SSD though. Makes a big performance difference. Subjectively, won't help benchmarks that much.
