A drive with bad blocks or bad servos will generally produce dozens of recoverable errors (that get logged) before hitting that fatal freeze. Likewise, bad memory will usually produce random crashes in addition to blue screens, etc. Has anyone looked at the event logs? Best way to back up a home PC is Ghost/Acronis/whatever and an external USB drive. Don't count on being able to just swap the physical backup drive in because there's no guarantee the USB IDE "controller" and the hardware controller in the PC are compatible.
