#71559 — IBM 7690 Clinical Workstation video/LCD controller ROM

Folks,

The IBM 7690 Clinical Workstation is an interesting beast. It appears to
have its own video ROM BIOS which functions as an MCGA BIOS, and when
the PS/2 Model 30 BIOS sees an option ROM at C000:0000... it assumes
it's a video ROM, and doesn't install its own ROM.

That's all well and good, but I'm trying to write an emulator for the
7690 and it would be great to have a dump of that ROM.

Anyone got access to one of these things?

The commands you'd need to run are...

A>DEBUG
-n M27256FI.BIN
-r bx
BX 0000
0
-r cx
CX 0000
4000
-w C000:0000
Writing 4000 bytes
-q

A>

and then get that file to me, somehow.

For anyone who cares... the 7690 is now booting and (mostly) running
diagnostics and LEDTOUCH.SYS works, in the current 86Box nightly builds
(7.0, since build #10058).

Type 1 and Type 2 PS/2 Model 70s have also been added.

Thanks to a generous donor (of ROM dumps), the 7690 implementation will
soon have a more "realistic" implementation.

This is also the first (and probably the last) independent MCGA ROM BIOS
we have seen. It does appear to be complete and would make implementing
a (virtual) MCGA adapter card possible without having to write a BIOS
for it first. The fact it was used on the 7690 is an oddity, since the
7690 also has a built-in MCGA BIOS that works just fine.

86Box's nightlies now have the Type 1 PS/2 Model 80, Type 1 and Type 2
PS/2 Model P70s, an implementation of the IBM XMA memory adapter (the
one that can speak XMS, EMS, and XMA), and significantly improved
emulation of other aspects of early PS/2s.

The Model 90 with IML remains a dream in my mind... emulating that thing
could unlock a lot of IML's secrets, and perhaps even show us the road
out of IML.
