I have never posted myself and have no activity. Obviously had I made the mistake of trying to join the group, I would have been instantly banned. Now I know not to make the mistake of trying. No need to be overly dramatic. For all of the flaws of Facebook, and despite the terrible interface it has for groups, there is lots of interesting traffic and chatting going on there that reminds me of how this group used to be in the late 80's and early 90's (yes, I've been there that long). Do I wish all the Apple II users of the world would settle on this newsgroup or a single real discussion forum for its chatting and news sharing? Absolutely. But am I willing to deal with Facebook's annoyances because that's where all the people seem to be? Absolutely again. I usually check this newsgroup, the AppleFritter forums, the Facebook group, and the A2Central page daily. There's way more stuff going on in the FB group every day, and it actually seems to be growing. I actually enjoy the chatter in spite of the interface. So to steal a line from the film "Stripes," "Lighten up, Francis." ;-) -Warr

That's putting the onus on volunteers who may well be swamped with requests (at least at times). You're ask them to keep track of new members and the communications they've had with them, etc. It's much easier and fair to have those who want to join who are using fake names and/or newly minted or hardly used accounts to request access if they're struck off the list. I don't know how well that mechanism is documented (and it should be documented - if it's not, maybe you could volunteer to help the admins to document the process), but it seems the fairer way to me. This isn't the case of a highly paid group of autocrats acting as gatekeepers. It's unpaid volunteers doing the best they can with what are likely a crappy and limited set of choices to protect the "integrity" (i.e. relevance of posts) of a group of enthusiasts. If you feel there's a better way, join the group, become an admin and propose changes from the inside. It's easy to judge these things when you haven't faced the challenges those trying to help others as volunteers face. And each volunteering job is different, so if you've volunteered for your local user group, or op shop charity, or whatever, but not a similar FB enthusiasts group, don't assume what worked there will work in the group we're talking about. The reason the responses are being called "over dramatic" is because they are coming across as expressing entitlement, petulance and an unreasonable level of expectation of what the admins are "meant" to be doing. There's always also the option of starting your own group (or your friend starting their own group) that has a more open membership policy and allows all comers in first and eliminates SPAMmers after the fact. There's no exclusivity agreement from FB saying this is the only and/or official Apple ][ enthusiasts group. Do that and get relevant content and a high signal to noise ration and it'll go gangbusters. Just my $0.02 worth europlus PS I have no affiliation with the admins and have not had correspondence with them regarding their membership policies - I'm just an ordinary Joe user who appreciates what work they do for us K-K00L <K-K00L@nomail.com> wrote: > On 2015-07-12 08:50:09 +0000, Jorma Honkanen <jormahonkanen@gmail.com> said: > >> I am admin in 68k mac group in FB, and i DO not allow always users with >> > non real name, or have joined in few last days/weeks to Facebook, to > join the group. >>> People be real and don't spam. > > Do you ban them for trying to join? Well exactly. Ask not what the Apple II Community can do for you but what you can do for the Apple II Community. We are not homeless people with nothing to eat. If Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak had worried about first world problems there would have been no Apple II to be enthusiastic about. Bill

Also making the choise over smartphone theres rarely time/possibility to mail people IF they are real or not. I try to check their page if it looks they are real, or are hobbyists at all. I admit it is not fool proof. It's not easy, nor it is paid job.

If someone were to get banned erroneously, they can message the admins and the admins can then allow them back in. It happens all the time. The admins most likely saw a suspicious account attempting to join the group and disallowed it. That is all that happened. It can be reversed if needed.

The names of the admins have already been provided here. Access to the group isn't needed to attempt to message those admins by their name (rather than via the group). It's not rocket surgery. Not accepting that fake-name Facebook accounts can reasonably be considered suspicious until proven otherwise is disingenuous at best. Take that as an insult if you like, but expecting the volunteer admins to bend over backwards for every person with a fake name account (and, in some cases, a zero-activity account) is unreasonable. You've already been provided with all the information any reasonable adult could use to either decide "it's not worth it for me/my friend" or "I (or my friend) will deal with this in a positive way" - but no, you keep using hyperbole and refuse to accept the admins' position. If it's that untenable, start your own Facebook group with the membership policies that make sense to you and leave the "exclusive" club of almost 2,500 members worldwide to their echo chamber in the secure knowledge you're doing The Right Thing™. It looks to me like they are more interested in complaining and creating drama than joining the Facebook group. After all, correcting the mistake would have been quicker and easier than all the posts complaining about it here. I just wonder if they would bring that kind of drama to the facebook group too.

Then there can be no question that you are a real person, and not afraid of doing some real work to have some fun with the Apple II. The downside of taking this route is that you actually need to learn something and spend some real time doing so, so I can't recommend this for someone just wanting to take a casual glance. As for FaceBook groups; they are a really crappy interface for threads. A person can't search a thread by date or topic. Usenet and Google Groups are a better bet. FaceBook prioritizes based on popularity and recent posts, so the Apple II Enthisiasts group can be spammed with pictures of the latest ebay auctions or someone's idea of a neato picture of a MacIntosh computer or something seemingly unrelated. There is nothing that anyone can do to change that since it's a social network. You just play the same game to get your stuff on there and if someone else is interested it sorts to the top. As for the moderators, they are extremely tolerant and believe in free speech and opinion sharing. Discrimination is based on judgement tempered with compassion and a recognition that we are all simply human inclusing the moderators. Like usenet, people drop by and post for awhile, then dissapear for awhile (or forever). Nothing is perfect except for Sheldon Simm's NTSC conversion palette. Bill

> I asked my friend if he got an email or whatever on Facebook before the ban, and he said no. Does facebook not have something where you email the admin to join? Or if not, if the admin is going to spend the time to checkout your profile, check your timeline etc., would it not be much easier to simply send the applying person an email saying something like , "hey tell me a bit about your interest Apple II stuff , because we get spammers", then simply approve them when you get a reasonable response. This idea of banning for life and blocking all access to the group (and the email of the admins) to any new Facebook user for commiting the crime of simply applying to the group is brain dead. I appreciate Steve's response of telling me the names of the admins, but I doubt my friend is going to be able to weed out those names to the actual people on Facebook, some are really common names. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: news@netfront.net ---
