What's new for Apple IIgs System 6.0.2?
After 22 years, 2 months, 2 days and 2 hours since System 6.0.1 was released, this is a summary of the visible changes. There have been many bugs fixed and many features added that are not immediately visible-they will enable developers to create better future products. Be sure to also read the Shortcuts file on the SystemTools3 disk for more information.

Finder (see also Finder Help)
The list is FSTs now includes the RDOS 3.3 name.
You can navigate through the folders hierarchy with 'Command-Up Arrow'.

Drivers
The Ethertalk driver is now included. This is the driver for the unreleased Ethernet for Appletalk card.

File System Translators (FSTs)
The HFS.FST bug is removed. Your HFS disks are now safe!
Some bugs from the PASCAL.FST were removed.
The DOS33.FST has been corrected.

Tools
The Animation tool (tool037) is now included. It allows fast animation on the Apple IIgs.
The TextEdit bug when more than 1024 styles were used is fixed.
The Font Manager bug is now squashed.
Some bugs in the Window Manager were removed.
QuickerGraph that accelerates some drawing routines is now included. This program is unfinished and your system may become unstable if you install it.

What's next?
This is a proof-of-concept update. Updating the System Software can be done! There are other bugs in the System, let's correct them for a 6.0.3 update in a month or so...

Antoine:

I have to ask. Does someone have another card up his sleeve regarding this
Ethernet/Appletalk Driver?

I certainly appreciate the ethernet card work going on these days, and the
software development that supports it.

But, it sure would be nice if those cards could add AppleTalk support.

I realize that is a _very_ tall order, but ...

In any case, congratulations on the 6.0.2 accomplishment. Impressive.

Wasn't the rare Apple ethernet card an intelligent device with onboard CPU?
That might be difficult to completely supplant in software. I thought I
remember hearing about a reverse-engineering effort, but that may be a figment
of my imagination.

Yes, it had a 65C02 co-processor. So did the Workstation Card that provided LocalTalk for the IIe.

Exciting news! I especially like the addition of keyboard navigation
features.

I never thought I would see a 2 at the end of that version number....

Who is going to add multitasking, and merge project facelift?

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this bug, but I have discovered that attempting to scroll by the windowful in Finder (by clicking in the gray scroll bar between the scroll box and one of the arrows) crashes the system, at least in GSport. Does anyone else have the same problem, e.g. by testing this on a real GS?

Bug: If I have a window open and I open a document in this window with
Teach, then quit to the Finder, the window reappears, but the arrow keys
highlight icons on the desktop, even though the window is active. I want the
arrow keys to select the icons in the active window.

Improvement: make Command-down arrow work the same as command-O

PS: These keyboard navigation features and new key shortcuts are *extremely*
useful and I believe that all other users of this system will likewise
appreciate them.

You might want to ping Geoff Body for permission to use his patched Appletalk
driver in this distribution. It fixes a number of ills that prevent IIgs
machines from working reliably over a number of commonly available
ethernet/localtalk bridges.

What about all the issues that GUPP patches? Were those fixed in 6.0.2? I'd be afraid to apply it to 6.0.2 as things have been moved around.

some gupp patches were applied, not all because of them are touchy.
gupp is well programmed, if it does not find the right pattern where the patch must be applied, it does not apply it, so it is safe.

For Appletalk, we share the same code base.

Good to hear. :)

So is 6.0.3 actually going to happen or was that just a joke? I'm holding off on 6.0.2 until I know.

Same code base as... what? Until Geoff disassembled and fixed the Appletalk
link layer code the vast majority of ethernet/localtalk bridges failed to work
with GS/OS. GUPP never addressed this particular problem to the best of my
knowledge.

Steven,
1. that is not my project. we have been working nearly six years on it for few results
2. if Geoff B. (Mr network)'swork was in sparta (where we were), them we have the info, otherwise we do not have and are happy to get it
3. doubts are useless, just ask

Antoine
