That's the very reason why I intentionally do not implement slot scanning but rather only use controller "ID bytes" on the single slot configurd by the user to verify the configuration. That's why I did what I did with IP65. X was integral to things already, so it was simpler to use self-modifying code by the time I came along and bolted on slot independence.

Just like the 6551, the CS8900 is sensitive to phantom reads. Take care what base address you index off.

Hi, >Just like the 6551, the CS8900 is sensitive to phantom reads. Take care what base address you index off. Interesting that it took so many posts in this thread until someone brings up the actually relevant aspect. My knowledge: - An absolute indexed read only causes a phantom read (from a wrong address) if the index causes a page crossing. This is usually not the case with Apple II slot independence. - However an absolute indexed write _always_ causes a phantom read. That read is from a wrong address if the index causes a page crossing. If there's no page crossing the read is from the final address afterwards written to. The latter is the case with Apple II slot independence. That's the reason why my drivers all use self modifying code for Apple II slot independence! Apart from that it's simply faster - and I'm making use of the X register to gain some additional speed. and finally the same code is used on the CBMs and ATARIs where the potential chip base addresses are more than one page apart. Regards, Oliver

What you explain seems to be the same technique used by the Super Serial Card firmware which uses $C08x as the base address.

The CPU simply doesn't have the addressing to do many interesting things in any better way. Of course, it's a no-no for ROMable code. Otherwise there is no reason to reject the judicious use of self-modifying code on a 6502.
