I cannot find any programming interface documentation on the Apple II Desktop (previously called MouseDesk). Anyone know where that is or how to do it?

I think this app is cool. It looks almost like GS/OS. Although it is more useful in an emulator where you can crank up the speed because it is slow on a 1 MHz Apple II. The coolest part is that when I start an app from inside it, the app runs and then comes right back to the desktop when the app exits (assuming it does a correct ProDOS exit).

The only other app I've seen that is as good as this for a basic "desktop" interface (without switching to a different OS like GEOS) is Prosel, which I haven't gotten installed yet. I'm open to ideas on what "desktop" type apps you like too.

Of course nothing beats a basic command-line interface for real work. But if you don't want to think to hard and just want to select an app, the desktop environments are helpful.

Not really a desktop program but a pretty good file selector and file viewer,
and system programs and MLI BYE command will return to the interface.

I haven't found any. I've vaguely started trying to trace the code, but it's slow going because I'm not spending any real time on it, it's using both aux and main memory for code (which doesn't play nice with Virtual ]['s debugging utilities) and event loops are just pesky.

Anyway, my very limited notes are at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-vhpREXRviKxUntBb5XRNxoeuQDvLnmNL85J4sEci_c/edit?usp=sharing

Only really useful stuff so far is that the desk accessories swap in at $800-$14ff and despite having exclusive access to the screen they delegate to the main event loop (around $4000) for cursor/mouse handling.

I've dropped a couple of other useful links in the doc, like JaY Edwards notes on MouseDesk/A2 Desktop versions, previously posted to USENET, as well as notes on bugs and my wish list. Custom DAs (such as text editor, image viewer, etc) are on the list.

> Of course nothing beats a basic command-line interface for real work. But if you don't want to think to hard and just want to select an app, the desktop environments are helpful.

Agreed. My current setup (in both my physical Laser 128EX w/ FloppyEmu and Virtual ][) is to boot into a 32MB image with just the stock BYE as a selector, but A2.DESKTOP's folder as the first item (followed by apps, games, utilities, etc) so tapping enter twice will launch it. I use that for organizing files on the HD image.

About the bugs:

1) if you update the ProDOS table the date for 2017 is displayed as 1917
still wrong but in another way.
2) AppleDesktop 1.1, I think, was designed for //gs and quit works with GSOS.

Quark Catalyst is a good desktop program but there is not docs for developer.
The only GUI with docs and CC65 support I know is GEOS.

Marco.

Progress made! I'm working through the DAs and have enough of the DeskTop API figured out to write a custom DA (hires/dhr file viewer).

Still lots of question marks, but you can watch progress at: https://github.com/inexorabletash/a2d

Not worth trying to reason with crazy.

I made the repo private and took the site offline for a while, hopefully our confused friend (who has been emailing me repeatedly) loses interest after a while.

Kind of reminds me of that guy that would take random programs, put a
new title screen on them, recompile, and attempt to sell them. (After
asking how.) No, not Tom Turley, but the more recent guy (in the past
10 years). Can't find his name just now, but he was from the US.

You mean "Michael Hardy" or whatever name he's using now?
