Tracked down CP/M COBOL, got it loaded under AppleWin, but having trouble compiling programs.

CP/M COBOL comes on 2 disk images:
* CPM_COBOL-80_A.dsk
* CPM_COBOL-80_B.dsk

Disk A: contains: linker (L80.com), Macro assembler (M80.com), cross reference map creator (CREF80.com) and includes 2 cobol source files: SQUAREO.cob and CRTest.cob.

Disk B: contains the cobol compiler (COBOL.COM) and 4 overlay (OVR) files.

This setup brings back memories of the MS-DOS tools I used to compile programs (especially Fortran and COBOL) back in the early 1980's. Everything looks complete.

Assume I need to run COBOL.COM to compile the COB source file to generate some kind of REL file, and then L80 linker to create a COM file. (Not sure how the Macro Assembler M80 fits into the chain yet, but it's got to be before before the linker, L80).

Nothing I have tried so far is working ... here's some of the commands I have tried just for the COBOL.com:

A>B:COBOL A:SQUAREO.cob
?command error
COBOL-80 v4.01 3-Oct-80 Copyright 1979,80 Microsoft
*

A>B:COBOL A:SQUAREO
(same result as above)

B:
B>COBOL A:SQUAREO
(same result as above)

B>COBOL A:SQUAREO.cob
(same result as above)

I've tracked down user manual (Microsoft_COBOL-80_1978.pdf) and had a good read of the relevant parts, but the compile and link examples are for Fortran not COBOL (in a COBOL manual !!).

Can anyone shed light on what I need to do ?

TIA,

Moose

Try downloading and searching the index file on Asimov at <ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/> for COBOL documentation.
You might find what your looking for there.

Thanks, already very familiar with Asimov. And I did search Asimov and other Apple ][ sites, and searched extensively for CP/M COBOL before making my original post.

You are probably in the same boat I was with The Forth language. Too many incomplete systems, but after disassembling each one and coming across the source of one popular application, I am able to program a more complete Forth system that has the best traits of all the other Forths.

It was even much easier to port some words written for a Forth system written for another platform.

Until recently I didn’t think any applications were written with Forth. A complete working application and its source helped me out a lot.

You may have to do the same and find a complete working application in Cobol to see how they managed the discrepancy

For what it's worth, the game Amnesia (by electronic arts) was written
in Forth. The game's english parser is really just a forth vocabulary.

For what it is Forth (ahem), a couple of games (eg. Spider Raid at http://www.hackzapple.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1321) and eduware (eg. Broderbund) were written in Forth,

Will keep searching and trying stuff out. Am also checking out CP/M COBOL for other systems to see if I can get any more clues ...

Will report back here and upload my notes and files to Asimov if I can get things to work.

Try this to compile SQUAREO.COB,place a listing in SQUAREO.PRN and place object code in SQUAREO.REL

A>B:COBOL A:SQUAREO,A:SQUAREO=A:SQUAREO

Next, use L80 and switches to save SQUAREO.COM to disk and exit

A>L80 SQUAREO/N,SQUAREO/E

Execute program by typing

A>SQUAREO

I hope this helps!

Looks like someone just uploaded COBOL on facebook to their dropbox. It is the same version # 4.68 as the ones you have but:

1) the file sizes are different (larger)
2) there are 4 disks
3) a scanned COBOL users guide is included
4) seems to be more complete than the 2 disk
