| Subject | Apple //e mouse API v Apple IIGS |

I am writing a game in Applesoft with a small mouse driver in assembly language. The mouse calls are very simple -- I use passive model; INITMOUSE, SETMOUSE, CLAMPMOUSE and READMOUSE. The game is in 40-column text and I clamp the mouse to 1-40 in X direction and 1-24 in Y direction. On the //e and //c all is good. The mouse action across the screen is smooth and easily controlled -- the x values range in an orderly way from 1 to 40 as I move the physical mouse a few inches. On the IIGS... not so much. Its as if after the clamp, the physical mouse only moves an inch or less to cover the whole 1-40 range. It moves so fast it seems to jump. Game action is terrible (slowing down to 1 MHz is no help). I also get readings outside of the clamped range occasionally but I suspect I can handle those more gracefully in the Applessoft. Is there an easy to make the IIGS clamping act like the IIe/IIc clamping? The firmware mouse API calls look exactly the same in the IIGS compared to the Apple I Mouse card (at least in passive mode which is all I am using) thanks, Paul

Make sure the selection for high speed mouse is set to NO. I use scaling in my assembly mouse program. Use a zero page address to hold the scale number. The clamping of the screen is 40 times the scale #. For a scale of 2, the clamp is 1-80, For a scale of 3, the clamp is 1-120 and for a scale of 4 the clamp is 1-120, etc Then have the mouse routine move the cursor one point for every 2, 3 or 4, etc points movement of the mouse.

Thanks, yeah i can try that. But still curious why the IIGS notion of clamping is different from the Apple Mouse //e notion. (On the //e no scaling is necessary). I don't see a High-Speed Mouse option anywhere in the control pane -- I see mention of it as a setting in the Keyboard control panel in the original IIGS Owners Guide. But maybe it was later removed? -Paul

And you are using the control panel when press ctrl-OA-ESC and not the one when booting into GSOS, correct?

Do not use the old mouse calls on a ROM 3 IIgs, not really supported. If I were you, I would detect the machine I am running on and call the mouse through the toolbox. Antoine
