#2070 — Question about a note in Merlin8 Manual

SubjectQuestion about a note in Merlin8 Manual

I came across an item while perusing the Merlin 8 manual and I wanted
to ask some questions about it.

I'm using Merlin 8 on a IIGS with a 1MB expansion.

Here's the note:

<quote>
APPLE IIGS USERS: Method B (which is assembling then running the
program from the monitor) cannot be used to test programs that call
Applesoft or Monitor routines in the address range $D000-$FFFF (such as
DEMO PROGRAM #1 that calls the BELL routine at $FBDD). This is because
on the GS, these routines are actually located in bank $FF of memory,
while the routine you're testing, at that point, is in bank $00. When
your routine calls the Applesoft or Monitor routine, it will not jump
to the proper bank, and the results are unpredicatable.
</quote>

The manual then suggests booting into PRODOS to BLOAD or BRUN the object file.

I realize that the note is true. (I can confirm!) But it has me
curious. I've heard of people transferring programs from one bank to
another in order to free up space in one bank or another and wondered
if someone like this were possible in this case. Could I move a program
from bank $00 to $FF or even $01 to get access to the monitor routines?

Cheers,

m

Just been poking at this a little bit.

I noticed that I can go to the monitor in Merlin, then execute:

*01/

That puts me in Bank 01. I see the program there and can run it without
problem.

Although I don't know why! :-)

That is probably because Merlin is running with the Prodos part of the LC enabled and not ROM and any calls above $D000 are calling Prodos.

Try using this at the beginning of your test program.

 LDA $D000
 STA $D7
 STA $C082
.
.
.
and this at the end

 LDA $C08B

Try using this at the beginning of your test program.

  LDA $D000
  STA $D7
STA $C082 ; turns on ROM
 .
 .
 .
 and this at the end

  LDA $C08B ; re-enable LC bank 1
  LDA $C08B
  LDA $D000
  CMP $D7
  BEQ FINI
  LDA $C083 ; re-enable LC bank 2
  LDA $C083
FINI

This should return the LC to its original state

Language Card. Probably called that because Integer Basic or Applesoft usually resides there.

Ah! Thanks again. I will try those routines you sent. Thank you.
