For anyone who loved to play Conan (and who didn't?) on real hardware, a hard-disk installable version is awaiting moderation on Asimov. Compressed to the point that it also fits on one side of a floppy, it still retains the look-and-feel of the original (the screen wipes in particular).
Return to the games of your youth once more. :-)

Seriously kick arse! Looking forward to playing it via the CFFA3000.

I finally TRIED downloading Conan, because it's still in the unsorted
folder on Asimov...and low and behold, it downloaded! I didn't think
you could download from unsorted or incoming. Anways, now that I've got
it...could you make a ProDOS 8 executable to launch Conan? <ducks> It
would be nice to run it from a IIGS program launcher or the Finder,
rather than dipping into BASIC to 'BRUN CONAN'.

You must be new here. ;-) Unsorted has sat with megabytes upon
megabytes of files for YEARS before. While it's true you can't download
from incoming, you can download from unsorted.

Okay, I can do that today, and re-upload.
Also, I believe that uso might have made one already.

In Asimov /incoming is now a version that can be run by clicking on "launcher".
I'll use the same technique for future releases (I'm currently porting my other releases to ProDOS, and working on some new ones).

Awesome! Thanks so much (waiting patiently for these latest uploads to
find their way out of the incoming directory) :-)

Err, that should say "clicking on loader.system", but the point is the same.

Conan works great when booted from the latest ProDOS version of the
program (with launcher), however, when I try to run the launcher from
System 6 on the IIGS, it freezes at the title screen. Thinking it was
GS/OS, I installed the ProDOS friendly Conan on my collection of 8-bit
games, which boots with ProDOS 8 v2.0.3 into FastBoot v3.4, but running
the Conan launcher won't work from that either.

If you'd like to test things with my 32meg volume of 8-bit games, it's
available from 'What is the Apple IIGS?' here:
http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/files/8-bit_Games.zip

I'm not 100% sure but you need to put the game in the root directory.
I mean:
/CONAN/
   <files>
    ...
works

/GAMES/CONAN
  <files>
   ...
don't works

Surely Mr. Ferrie/qkumba/san inc knows better then me.

It sounds like I might have more work to do, in that case.
I obviously didn't test enough configurations.

The problem is that I didn't reclaim enough memory. I'll fix it.

Actually, the problem was a typo on the memory reclaiming (wrong register for the store), and the bug triggers only when the prefix is more than 15 characters. That's why running from the root directory worked.
I'm going to try to fix the game bug in level 6 at the same time.
See http://pferrie.host22.com/misc/lowlevel16.htm
for the details. It was fun trying to track that one down, and happens more often than you might think.

A fixed version is in Asimov now. The level 6 crash bug is fixed, too. When the machine is crushed, the electric arc has a small artifact left behind, which is unfortunate, but it's better than nothing.

Awesome! Look forward to playing it once it moves out of 'incoming'.
Couldn't help but notice all the other ProDOS related uploads too!
Between yourself and usotsuki, looks like a fine catalogue of classic
games that can run from larger volumes.

Yes, I had a busy night. ;-)
That's everything of mine right now, except for Aquatron. I'm working on the first 100% file-based version. That is, one that has the nice fade effect on the title screen, and actually saves the high-scores table (which you've probably never seen). Every other file version is broken in some way - they all crash after playing one or two games. As for the disk versions, a forensic analysis of the Les Belin Crackers version shows that it's a stolen crack from CCB. They just replaced the title screen and and disabled one disk access. The hacked checksum override is identical. There's no mistake there.

We're here to help.
