These were colored in Windows paint.Using my Slideshow driver written in
cc65 we can view old printshop, old printmaster and old minipix files in a
glory never known when these were common-place and the Apple II was in wide
use. For a copy of these on a real Apple II disk image along with other
demos and stuff click here

and for a list of related links visit the A2B web page links section at

and that will tell you where to go and get the converter that made these and
other converters and source code for Apple II Graphics etc. that I have
written.

I was curious to see what kind of graphics could be done with double lo-res, and it started out really good. Then all of sudden everyone got the measles.

Not sure what you mean but if you don't like the dithered output think of it
as giving you a template to redraw the screen. You can also do much more
with DLGR than simply displaying a BSAVE image, but like redrawing the
screen, no magic converter will do this for you.

I could do alot more with Double Lo-Res but for a variety of reasons I
parked it there for now. I think you need to consider that the average
double lo-res user is not capable of using these converters to their current
potential. There have been 3 cases recently that demonstrate this.

Despite that:

- The A2B converter produces Double Lo-Res Sprites and Game Backgrounds
sveral screens in size.
- The B2D converter produces Double Lo-Res Screens for Mixed Text and
Graphics as well as Full-Screens
- My Earlier converters which have been around a couple of years produce
Fonts etc.

These are supported by library routines in Aztec C65 and cc65. All of this
is documented. Demos are available.

I am making continual progress in conversions etc. in the other Apple II
graphics modes and there are more people interested in that especially the
IIGS SHR stuff, (and so am I), so unless somebody is generally going to do
something with Double Lo-Res there won';t be any further development unless
the mood strikes me.

The current state of development is that if someone wants to use a modern
paint program to actually do some work, these converters of mine will
provide them with Apple II graphics that they can use in an Apple II
program, written preferably in C or Assembler from my view.

The examples that I have produced are simply to support the tools that I
have written and not to entertain but to provide examples of test output.
The joy for me is in the doing, what anyone else does is up to them. I
realize that people don't have any more time or patience than I do, so I
perfectly understand why these converters don't see any use. There are just
there like anything else.

I have mentioned it many times before but I guess I'd better mention it
again;

All of my converters provide post-conversion preview output that can be
edited in a modern paint program and reprocessed until the user gets the
results they want, within the limitations of the particular Apple II
graphics mode that they have targeted.

I call this "round-trip editing".

Since these converters will compile and run on Windows, Linux, and OSX the
only real limitation is the user. If a user cannot use a modern graphics
editor to some degree of functional competency, and does not know how to
type, then I perfectly understand that they will be presented with
challenges that will require some skills development.

For the double lo-res converter, since I provide the world's largest
collection of Mini-Pix in my clipshop utility, this makes an ideal starting
point for someone who wants to learn about Apple II graphics. Demo disks
with AppleSoft BASIC are also provided for the beginner, showing how to make
a double lo-res file viewer and slide-show.

The activity that I expect is something like learning to walk; first a baby
step is taken and the user learns how to prepare an image for conversion.
Afterwards they learn to use disk management tools like CiderPress and
emulators like AppleWin. They can use the slideshows provided in C to
automatically set-up and display their own efforts. Beyond that
progressively more advanced activities are supported; round-trip editing
being one of these.

The use of Minipix as the basis for a starting exercise for learning about
Double Lo-Res graphics is really quite novel but really very effective as a
starting point. It's about as hard as crayoning in a coloring book with 12
colors, and black and white and grey.

Provided the goal is to actually do something with converted bitmapped
graphics in double lo-res of course. There's lots more that can be done and
the excellent advanced demos far outshine what these converters have to
offer, but not everyone can do those adavnced demos. I still contend that if
a person writes in C they can advance pretty quickly from converting
graphics to writing stuff that is as good as anything out there, advanced or
not.
