Hi,

Am I correct to presume that every Enhanced //e and every IIgs
supports the BBR BBS - Branch on Bit Reset or Set instructions?

I seem to understand that they are not supported on the //c - but
that's no issue for my use case.

Thanks,
Oliver

The 65816/IIgs does not support the BBR/BBS/RMB/SMB instructions.

Hi Kelvin,

Thanks for pointing out! I somehow presumed the WDC 16-bit chip would be a
clean superset of the WDC 8-bit chip.

Regards,
Oliver

The 16-bit chip needed those op-codes for other fancy stuff.

Only available on 65C02 made by Rockwell or Western Design Center

As far as I know Apple never shipped a machine with those instructions present. The original WDC version of the 65C02 (as well as licensed versions made by Synertek, NCR, and GTE) didn't have them. The extra bit manipulation instructions were added by Rockwell in its implementation of the 65C02 targeted at embedded systems. It was only later that the WDC also added the bit manipulation instructions (plus the STP/WAI instructions from the 65C802/65C816) to the W65C02, although for a while they also continued to sell the W65SC02 which didn't have them.

As far as I know Apple never used the Rockwell variant (and the W65C02 variant that had the extra instructions came too late) so I don't think Apple ever shipped a machine that supported those instructions. Certainly people could have replaced their CPUs (either in repairs or when upgrading an older machine) with the more capable chip.

The 65C802/65C816 were designed by WDC before they added Rockwell's extensions to the W65C02. The opcodes that correspond to Rockwell's extensions were used for other (more useful, IMHO) instructions on the 16-bit chips.

That chronology was totally new to me - good to know :-)

BTW: In general I agree of course regarding the usefulness of the BBR/BBS
instructions. However, I right now have a use case that would have
significantly benefited from them...

My old Platinum had a G65SC02P-2. Pretty sure that does not support
Rockwell extensions.
