Oliver Schmidt is using his recent free time to make some improvements to
IP65, the TCP/IP stack for 6502.

https://github.com/cc65/ip65/commits/master

Clues in his commit messages hint at a "planned W5100 HTTP client program"
that will be coming next.

Has any IP stack taken advantage of the built-in IP stack on the Uthernet
II to reduce code size in A2 memory space?

I noticed that the Contiki driver for w5100 is larger than the drivers for
cs8900 and lancegs - but I’m not sure what that means from an A2 memory
footprint perspective with a Contiki app running.

This is sort od the wrong question for several reasons:

1. There's no real scenario in which an existing app that merely fits
into memory in on setup would benefit from more memory in another
setup. So if an app is written to run with the LANceGS or the Uthenet
I, then there's nothing more to gain than having it run as-is with the
Uthernet II as well.

2. 8-bit TCP/IP doesn't allow for nice abstraction layers. So every
TCP/IP stack comes with its specific API tightly coupling the apps
using it to the way it works. So you can't replace one TCP/IP stack
with another. And because - as you corretly wrote - the W5100 comes
with it's own TCP/IP stack this means that no other TCP/IP stack can
"take advantage" of the W5100 one.

So the "correct" question is to ask if there are 8-bit apps (not
TCP/IP stacks) which leverage the TCP/IP stack of the Uthernet II. The
answer to that question is 'yes':

1. The ADTPro Virtual Ethernet Drive can replace the Disk II Drive
code inside(!) ProDOS 8 only with the Uthernet II as it only then is
small enough.

2. The IP65 WGET app only runs on the Uthernet II as it requires a TCP
functionality (flow-control) missing in the IP65 TCP/IP stack.

3. ][-Vision (https://github.com/KrisKennaway/ii-vision) only runs on
the Uthernet II as it a) merely fits into memory and b) doesn't have
any cycle to spare for doing TCP/IP handling on the 6502.

4. Someone (I don't remember who) hacked a BBS system (I don't
remember which, but likely DDial) that allows for 7 parallel phone
connections with 7 modems on 7 SSCs to instead allow for 4 parallel
Telnet connections via the 4 TCP/IP connections supported by the
Uthernet II - obvious that this only works with the W5100 providing
its own TCP/IP stack. He thought about employing a second Uthernet II
for another 3 Telnet connections.

5. I'm up to something new - stay tuned ;-)

Regards,
Oliver

Hi David,

That's absolutely correct :-)

It shares with wget65 the approach to use the IP65 6502 IP stack for
DHCP and DNS to then switch to the W5100 IP stack for HTTP.

However, it does something different with the HTTP body than storing
it in a file or on a volume.

Regards,
Oliver
