I have been trying for months to do some 6502 assembly programming on Apple II but am having so many problems. Mainly, DOS commands are not working on the emulator I am using: Virtual II Version 6.3.7 with Apple II E ROM loaded in. I tried using the PRING CHR$(4) trick as instructed by my programming books, but that does not work either. I just get syntax errors. Does anyone know why these DOS commands are not working? Without them I cannot format/initialize a blank disk to use with the Merlin Pro Assembler I have been coding on. For that matter, does anyone have an earlier copy of Merlin, one that does not use ProDOS? Preferably the one in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4vexfGMjEY Please help. I have been studying 6502 for a long time and want so much to try some programming with it.

I have been studying 6502 for a long time and want so much to try some programming with it. I encourage you to continue using Prodos. For formatting disks, download this image: http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/ftp.apple.asimov.net/images/masters/prodos/PRODOS-8%20v4.0.2%20System.dsk This is a bootable Prodos floppy disk image that has a program called System Utilities on it. You can format images with system utilities. I also encourage you to use a hard disk (omnidrive -- or whatever it is that Virtual II calls it) image instead of floppy images. You will need to use System Utilities to format the hard disk image, and create a directory for Merlin. then copy everything from the System Utilities disk into the root directory of your hard disk image, and everything from the Merlin Pro disks into the merlin directory.

You need DOS to initialize disks and use commands through the chr$(4) trick. By default, you have no DOS in Apple IIs. Use the link given above or browse the FTP Asimov repository (ask Google for a link) Good luck FAA6G ;-)

I have been studying 6502 for a long time and want so much to try some programming with it. COPY II+ is an excellent utility to have on hand. It can do everything from formatting both DOS 3.3 and Prodos disks, catalog both Dos's, rename volumes and files, delete files, copy files between both Dos's, create directories under Prodos. I find version 8.4 the most stable. Don't use v9.1, it has bugs. And I concur. Keep using prodos. It has way more programming power down the road once you get a collection of the right utilities. The directory structure offered by Prodos will keep your files organized. And a hard drive or flash drive will help speed things up tremendously. But keep up with it. The rewards are great once everything falls into place.

Just discard the files you do not have any use of (typically my own stuff). In case you would like to get a ProDOS 8 disk image, I would suggest that you download the disk image, I should come by with a suitable disk image later in the day, I'll post a message in this thread with a suitable URL if you're interested. Beware of using some features from copy program such as Copy II+ as it tends to transform the format of target disk images (from byte level to nibble image) under Virtual 2 at least. Okay. This is another problem I have been having: Whenever I try to save to, or catalog a blank/initialized disk WITH Merlin, I get 45 VOLUME NOT FOUND. Yet, with the ProDOS System Utility I can catalog it and everything works fine.

Hence it is normal that a disk initialized in ProDOS is not suitable for being catalog listed from a DOS 3.3 flavour of Merlin... Therefore I would suggest that: a) you exit from Merlin main menu (Q command), b) eject the disk in drive 1 of your emulator box and do a file copy under Mac OS X of this disk image file. c) insert the copy in drive 2 of your emulator box d) Type the command "INIT HELLO,D1" from the "]" command prompt. e) Place the newly inited disk image into drive 2 of your emulator box f) Reboot the Merlin disk (after inserting its disk image into drive 1). g) From Merlin main menu, you should then be able to catalog the disk in drive 2 of your emulator box (just select drive 2, beforewards). From then on, copying some source files from disk 1 to disk 2 under merlin should be easy, do not forget to Save .s files and to Write t. text files for such copying in order to preserve the usage of such files. -- Growing old is mandatory.. growing up is optional.. But the other way round is as true.

Therefore, the remaining options you have is either to use the ProDOS 8 version of Merlin 8, to initialize the disk with a ProDOS 8 utility, and then under Merlin 8 for ProDOS, to type the D command (for disk): "PFX=2" (assuming the newly initialized disk is in drive 2) and then to catalog the disk. Or just type in the "=1" or "=2" whjen prompted to enter a pathname to catalog or simply copy the files under Mac OS X. In case you are looking for a workable Merlin version (ProDOS 8 v2.55 which is not the latest), a URL to download from is http://bgilon.free.fr/apple2/P8Merlin_ZBrun.do HTHATS, Benoît -- Growing old is mandatory.. growing up is optional.. On Windows, I'd recommend: AppleWin On OSX / Linux, I'd recommend: Jace Why? Because you can mount virtual .DSK images from the command line for fast turn around time. Whether you use DOS3.3 or ProDOS won't really matter once you have a work-flow down. I'm using cc65 -- the assembler + linker, a2tools, and a BASH script to assemble, link, copy the binary to a .DSK image. Let us know if you have any other questions.

I am using Merlin Pro Version 1.34. Does anyone have experience with that? The only version of Merlin Pro 2.0 I could find did not have automatic line numbering, and I could not figure out how to escape the Editor. Funny thing is that if I make a copy of the Merlin disk, I can save and run assembly programs on that, but not one that has been initialized via Copy II Plus or ProDOS Utility.

If you want a > listing somewhere besides the screen, type "prtr 1" before "asm". Command-Q takes you out of the screen editor, and back to the line editor, where you can then assemble with 'asm'. The original poster mentioned using Virtual II. On Virtual II, you have to double tap the command key for it to register as an open-apple keystroke. That is, in the Merlin Pro screen editor, you have to double tap the Mac keyboard command key every time you want to use an open-apple editing command, like Command-X for copy, Command-V for paste, Command-B to go to the top of the file, Command-N to go to the bottom of the file, Command-D to delete a line, etc. It is incredibly annoying, but after a while I got used to it. You hit Command twice in quick succession, holding it the second time while typing the letter: tap-tapHOLD-Q-release to quit the screen editor, for example. In any case, I'm using Merlin 8 v.2.58, which I find satisfactory. I got the hang of Merlin 8 now, but it, too, will not recognize my formatted disks? Does anyone have a copy of one they regularly use?

Does anyone have a copy of one they regularly use? How are you formatting the disks? And what volume name are you giving them? Assuming you are formatting them as Prodos Disks, you will have to enter a volume name when you format them. Something like: /CODE When you are using Merlin 8, you will have to refer to the disks using this volume name. The easiest thing to do is set the prefix (like a 'cd' command in Unix). In Merlin 8 you can set the prefix from the main menu by first hitting 'd' for 'disk command' and then typing pfx /VOLUME.NAME While replacing VOLUME.NAME with whatever you named your disk. Of course, the disk must be in the drive for this to work. After you do this, Merlin will always look on that disk (more exactly, it will look in the volume directory of that disk) for whatever filename you specify. If you are not formatting your disks as Prodos disks, you must format them as Prodos disks to work with Merlin 8.

Under Prodos, you may have to include the forward slash in the name for it to be recognized as a volume name. Try entering /TEST.DSK

Please refer to my previous post on this thread to catalog a ProDOS disk w/o knowing the volume name (just use the "=drivenumber" keyboard entry when prompted for pathname on the catalog entry menu. In the same post, I quoted a URL from where you can download main components for the Merlin 8 ProDOS version assembler. Enough for you to do your testing before downloading the full version from asimov. HTHATS, Benoît -- Growing old is mandatory.. growing up is optional.. But the other way round is as true.
