Hi,

QuickLookSHK was developed as per request by D Finnigan. It is based on the NuFX library developed by Andy Fadden.

The binary code of QuickLookSHK is bloated because the entire NuFX library is compiled together with its source code. To get the job done, only several functions of NuFX library are called.

There are 3 ways to develop a lean and mean version of QuickLookSHK:

1) prune all the unnecessary source code from NuFX Library.

2) write a module to extract the necessary information from an SHK archive.

3) compile the NuFX library into an external framework and install it in /Library/Frameworks.

What do you think?

Regards.

Mark

1 and 2 are good. 1 is good because the NuFX library will change seldomly, I
would presume.

2 is good too because you will learn more about the NuFile format. I
actually took this route when writing Format Converter for Mac GUI Vault. I
just wrote a new implementation based on the specification document. The
downside to option 2 is that it'll take more time and you'll have to make
all the special case code for wacko-case ShrinkIt archives.

If your time is limited, I suggest option 1.

David and Mark,

Not that it matters much, but did you realize that your acronym for this
thread is spelled "wrong" :) The SHR part looks like something I would
post...

Here have a Quick Look at something Alex and I did today...

Serves as a great plug for your work.

Bill,

On second thoughts, we can combine forces and produce a QuickLookSHR. Since you are the graphics expert, you do the SHR part and I, the budding MacOS X programmer, do the QL part.

What needs to be generated is a 24-bit RGB bitmap (8 bits for each component).

Regards.

That's alright; maybe sometime in the future, we might be able to collaborate.

The program to parse the master header and item headers of an SHK archive to Objective C is almost done except dealing with weird kind of gsos option list.

QuickLookSHK had been set to handle files with the following extensions: shk, bxy and sdk.

The original Apple IIGS program, GSHK, could create self extracting archives with the suffixes bse and sea. QuickLookSHK can also be used to peek at the contents of such files since it uses code from the NuFX library developed by Andy Fadden. It may be necessary to rename such files to a suffix of SHK.

I hope you use the term "work" loosely:) Half the fun is misrepresenting my
antics as "work"... the other half is of course doing the "work"...

Currently, my main interest is learning to program in Swift. To learn the finer aspects of the language, a project to parse the master header of an NuFX archive as well as the headers of the archived items is being developed. So option 2 might take a shorter time; it's a matter of translating the Swift code to Objective-C. In fact, the Swift code uses the methods in the Objective-C frameworks to parse the data. BTW, the code is developed using Swift Playground.

I tried option 3 by building an external framework which can be used by NuShrinkItX as well as QuickLookSHK. Works well.

Some details:
QuickLookSHK is, as suggested by its name, a plugin for MacOSX's QuickLook.app. It allows the user to take a peek at the contents of an NuFX archive. Double-clicking on the preview window will launch the default program which can handle SHK files which, in my case, has been set to NuShrinkItX. It is expected to work with MacOS X 10.5 to 10.10.

Regards.

Mark
