#785 — The Apple IIgs S-Prize

We’re now accepting pledges to increase the value of the S-Prize! The Prize has been established to encourage Apple II developers to create an open-source SMB2 file system for the Apple IIgs which meets certain functional requirements.

We’ve started with the $400 seeded by myself and the Apple II development fund sponsored by Ross Falconer and sales of the old EGO Systems products through Syndicomm for several years. As of the time I write this post, the prize is up to $570 total.

Visit http://www.s-prize.gs/pledge to offer to contribute to the prize. Your pledge will soon be listed on the Pledges page on the site, and the total will tick upward. You won’t have to actually pay up any money until the S-Prize is claimed by a successful developer or development team! At that time, we’ll email you to request the funds you promised.

You will not have to send any money until an SMB2 client for the Apple IIgs is successfully created and meets the requirements, including passing approval by the S-Prize administration team.

Developers: If you're interested in trying to claim the prize, visit http://www.s-prize.gs/rules/ for the rules and qualifications; this will let you know what the file system needs to be able to do, as well as things like what sorts of licensing we ask you to use (basically any good open source license that allows code re-use), hardware and software compatibility requirements, and minimum functional requirements.

Sure thing, but I suppose the bigger question is this: how many people
actually have the skills to do this? Certainly not me!

I think this would be a job for Brutal Deluxe or Mr. Wannop.

This is a perfectly enormous amount of work and will require someone with a 
very broad skill-set.  The only folks I know of in the A2 world that could 
pull this off are probably way too busy to devote the necessary time.

But, best of luck!  Would be nice to have.

An NFS client would be far simpler, but I understand the rationale for aiming 
at SMB.

This could be done as a team project, and there are other open-source 
projects that might be adapted, conceivably.

While hopefully not overestimating my abilities, I do think I could possibly do this.  But as Steven mentioned, time is an issue.  And much like Sheppy (I presume), I have a lot of other projects I'm intent on doing before I could even take a look at something like this.  

Having said that, Sheppy makes a good point that it could be a team project.  It probably *should* be a team project.  To that end, if someone is forming a team to tackle this, feel free to ping me.  I'd love to contribute, but I don't think it's a good use of my time to start this on my own right now as I could see it quickly languishing due to overall commitments. 

It's hard enough for me to finish my "simple" projects. ;)

That's over $500 a piece for a team of 3.  Not saying anything, it just seems like a realist number to achieve a goal like this.  Anyway, I threw in my 10 bucks. 


A couple of questions:

I assume a stand-alone app would be acceptable as well?

I don't even know if there is IPV6 support for the Apple IIgs, but SMB supports IPV6 URLs.  Is it safe to target IPV4?

I'm regretfully not in a position to participate in the fun and merriment, but 
I do have to wonder aloud whether the user-space smbclient code (as available 
for most Linux distros) might not be a reasonable place to start.  It's a 
command line tool that can poll servers for shares, copy files, etc.

Doesn't give you a mountable filesystem, but perhaps the guts can be adapted. 
  Last I looked, the Linux vfs extension ran in kernel space so it's doubtful 
that anything there can be ported - at least not without considerable grief.

No. It needs to be implemented as a file system, not as a utility. 
Utilities already exist for getting files in and out of a GS. We're 
looking for a way to interface with servers at an OS level for use as a 
file server, just like AppleShare.

Would have to be IPv4, since the GS doesn't do IPv6 at this time. I 
mean, unless you know something I don't. :)
