I grew up on the Apple II; it was my dream machine, my first and only love, and when the PC came out I grew up on that as well but always had a warm spot in my heart for the II. The PC back then ran at 4.7mhz, 64K RAM, ISA bus, CGA graphics, ssdd floppy drives, etc... Fast forward to today's 3.5ghz state-of-the-art 12-core beasts with cache and 64GB RAM, PCI Express bus, USB 3.0, QSXGA 2560x2048 graphics, NO MORE FLOPPY DRIVES, solid-state/multi-terabyte drives, 1gb ethernet, etc... Surely most if not all of us use these type of machines on a daily basis, so I ask you... to what end have we upgraded our machines over the years? This should answer the "to what end" part of your question. > > The PC's we have today are nothing like the PC's of old, and yet at no point have I ever stopped believing that my PC today is anything but a PC. After all, I am no longer the 10 year old I was 33 years ago, I've replaced a lot of old thoughts with newer ones, substantially added to my knowledge base, got rid of some old habits, hopefully added some new good ones, etc... I'm still me, just an enhanced me, but I'm *ME*. Our PC's no longer have the ISA bus, but I don't see people rioting in the streets because they can no longer leverage all their old ISA peripherals and their ISA knowledge; same can be said for EISA, VESA, and AGP. Our PC's no longer have floppies, and I can't say I miss them or have any need for them and I don't think anyone is lamenting our inability to leverage that technology anymore. The list goes on and on, I'm sure you get my point. > > To answer the "what part of the Apple II universe (hardware, software, > knowledge, etc.) do you hope to leverage" part of your question, I don't think any consideration should be given towards leveraging any of the old devices (when in "FAST" 1.21 gigawatts mode) any more than we should give any consideration towards leveraging 360K floppies and ISA based peripherals in our current PC's. > > Imagine an Apple II that you can switch on in native mode and have it be exactly what it is, that Apple II from 30+ years ago in it's original form, but then you can switch it to "FAST" mode and it's a supercharged 250mhz 65C832-based (or some other derivative that makes sense nowadays given the advancements since that design was conceived) Apple II that ditches the old bus and has a new bus that supports gigs of RAM, 32-bit color SXGA graphics, Sound-blaster sound, terabyte hard drives, USB, Ethernet, etc... You use native mode to leverage all your nostalgia-based programs and peripherals and you use fast mode to extend it into the future. > > I have a dream! Follow your dream and make your 'Gigawatt Apple II'. Others will try to talk you out of it but what do they know. :-) Charlie
