Hmmm... I don't and I have been using this setup for many months. 
Indeed, ADTPro's website makes no mention of this.

You bring up a good point. What is preventing the Pi from toast?

On the Pi, I am using a USB to serial converter. Perhaps that is 
performing the level shifting?
